Growing Computers and Other Tales

Fakultät: Gestaltung, Studiengang: Promotionsstudiengang Kunst und Design / Freie Kunst / Medienkunst

This research project explores possibilities of growing computers from living biological materials and organisms. The main focus of the project is on the organism Physarum polycephalum, commonly known as true slime mould, and its mechanisms and functions.

Computing is here understood more metaphorical as a way of processing information and responding to our environment. Working with living organisms is very different to silicon-based computers -- also much slower. Actually one could say, working on combining slime mould and computing is a manifestation of deceleration, an attempt to make in some regards the slowest computer in the world.
The exhibition presents live experiments and videos.
