Prof. Gutierrez Marquez wins 2019 German Architecture Prize
The architectural firm Bruno Fioretti Marquez has been awarded the 2019 German Architecture Prize. This national award, which is endowed with €30,000 in prize money and considered the most important acknowledgement for architects in Germany, recognises the powerful and contemporary conversion, extension and refurbishment of Wittenberg Castle.
According to the jury chaired by Prof. Arno Lederer: »The successful further development of this historic building adds a powerful and contemporary new layer to Wittenberg Castle. A confident and at the same time self-evident contribution to the history of the location, building and usage has been created in a conceptually and technically impressive manner.«
José Mario Gutierrez Marquez has been Professor for Architectural Space and Design within the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-University Weimar since 2011. He founded Bruno Fioretti Marquez architectural firm in Berlin in 1995 together with Donatella Fioretti and Piero Bruno after studying architecture in Argentina and Italy.
The jury was impressed by the high overall quality of the 181 submissions to the 2019 German Architecture Prize. A further five awards and five acknowledgements were conferred. Another professorship of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism was also acknowledged: together with her architectural firm Heide & von Beckerath and the Institute for Applied Urbanism (ifau), Prof. Verena von Beckerath (Professor for Housing Design) and was acknowledged for the integrative building project at the former flower wholesale market (IBeB) in Berlin.
The award ceremony will take place on 26 September 2019 at the Staatsbibliothek on Unter den Linden in Berlin.
