NHRE Students Visit GFZ Potsdam for Annual Excursion
As part of the long-standing collaboration between the NHRE master degree program at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), our students had the opportunity yesterday to participate in the annual academic excursion to Potsdam. This tradition, now running for over a decade, provides the students with an invaluable blend of historical, scientific, and interdisciplinary insight.
The day began with a guided tour through the historic Telegrafenberg science campus, offering students a rare glimpse into pioneering scientific landmarks such as the Michelson Interferometer, the Great Refractor, and the iconic Einstein Tower—a site that continues to inspire generations of geoscientists and physicists. These locations not only reflect the rich scientific heritage of the GFZ but also anchor current geoscientific research within a broader historical context.
Following lunch, the students engaged with a series of topical and thought-provoking lectures organized by Prof. Dr. Fabrice Cotton, offering insights into seismic hazard analysis, ground motion modeling, and earthquake engineering—key themes in the NHRE curriculum.
The annual excursion to GFZ Potsdam has become a highlight of the NHRE master degree program, continually fostering exchange between future engineers and leading researchers in natural hazard risk mitigation.
