Infomail from the Presidium: Exam Period Update

Dear students, dear staff,

Fortunately, the coronavirus infection rate in and around Weimar continue to decline. New corona regulations have been in place since 26 January 2021, but issues such as how to handle exams are now the responsibility of the individual universities. Here at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, we have been planning and taking numerous options and solutions into consideration to ensure that exams take place as safely as possible. However, we also take concerns about having to participate in in-person exams seriously. If you have any concerns about taking exams, please see below for your options for withdrawing from taking an exam.

Please read the information below carefully:

Summary:

  • The exam period remains unchanged: 8 February to 5 March 2021
  • Be sure to inform yourself on the exam schedules of the different faculties.
  • Hygiene and safety regulations will be observed and also expanded (masks, maintaining distance, regular airing out of rooms, sanitising equipment).
  • FFP2 will be issued for examinations for free and must be worn when exiting and exiting exam areas. It is also recommended that medical masks be worn during exams.

Large halls across the city (Falkenburg, Asbach-Sporthalle, Innenstadt-Sporthalle, and the seminar rooms in the Weimarhalle) will be used to conduct exams in addition to the rooms on campus. We have significantly reduced the maximum number of seats in each exam location.

  • Free attempts (Freiversuch) are also permitted in the 2020/21 winter semester.
  • Regulations regarding compensation for disadvantages can be found in the Corona Regulations (MdU 39/2020), as well as in their first amendment.

The exam period is set for the university as a whole for 8 February to 5 March 2021. Please pay careful attention to the individual exam information provided by your faculty and relevant exam office.

Major effort is being made at all levels to ensure that as many students as possible are able to successfully complete the 2020/21 winter semester in an organised manner, despite the current circumstances. Many students have expressed their desire to take exams during the scheduled exam period rather than postponing them.

Our instructors have explored various exam formats for their courses and have come up with creative and innovative solutions. In-person exams will only take place where due to data protection legislation no other options are available. Currently, in-person exams are scheduled to take place mainly from 15 February to 5 March 2021. These exams will be carried out in full compliance with hygiene and safety regulations. In addition, the Board of Governance will be supplying all exam participants and supervisors with free certified FFP2 masks. Please be aware that FFP2 masks must be worn when entering and exiting the exam area. Wearing medical grade masks during the exam is also strongly recommended. Corona sanitising kits will again be available at each exam location.

The university has converted the Falkenburg Sports Centre to provide enough space for in-person exams and has also rented additional rooms:

  • Asbach-Sporthalle, located at Florian-Geyer-Straße 77;
  • Innenstadt-Sporthalle Sophienstiftsplatz, located at Gropiusstraße 1and
  • Seminar rooms 1 and 2 in the Weimarhalle, located at UNESCO-Platz 1.

The exact locations and times for exams can be found in the information and exam schedules provided by your faculty. These will be available in good time before the exams.

Free attempts (Freiversuch) are also permitted for winter semester exams. If you have failed an exam, it may be counted as a free attempt (Freiversuch), meaning the exam will not be graded and the attempt will not count against you.

Please note: Free attempts (Freiversuch) cannot be claimed more than once for the same (module) exam. Free attempts (Freiversuch) do not, of course, apply in the (very rare) cases where exams are failed because of cheating or breaching regulations.

The options to help make studying during the pandemic easier for you, are outlined in the regulations on managing the effects of the corona virus pandemic on studying and academic affairs (MdU 39/2020) and its first amendment; these options include:

  • requesting a part-time semester of leave of absence,
  • extending deadlines for submitting coursework or theses, or
  • suspending compulsory semesters abroad.

Please refer to your respective examination office in case of questions or send an email to studium[at]uni-weimar.de. Thank you.

We wish you a successful exam period and extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributes with great effort to its success.

On behalf of the Board of Governance
Prof. Dr. Christian Koch
Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs
