Further funds garnered for internationalization
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will receive almost €150,000 over the next three years from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for international doctoral candidates and post-docs. With a share of 45 percent of international doctoral candidates, the university earned 2nd place in Germany in a project of the DAAD, the University Rectors Conference (HRK) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
The successful application is based on a concept that was created jointly by the Bauhaus Research School as an umbrella organization for doctoral candidates and post-docs and the International Office. "We want to provide international doctoral candidates at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar outstanding general research conditions. That requires a total concept that conveys the expectations of the German research culture to young researchers and provides support in integration into the university", says Ute May, manager of the Bauhaus Research School.
The funding comes from the STIBET Doctoral Candidate Program and are will be used for measures that are tailor-made specially for the needs of the international doctoral candidates and post-docs. A comprehensive advising and qualification concept is planned. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar hopes through this to secure the success of international new academics and to use its potential for the internationalisation of the university.
With this additional support, a continuous and professional system of advising, from the first contact to graduation and beyond, will be guaranteed. The large number of international doctoral candidates will be not only qualified and professionally integrated, but also socially integrated. At the same time, successful completion of studies will be be supported and promoted. In addition, alumni work will be intensified in order make use of the potential of the graduates.
Apprenticeships and research assistants are a new format of support. With that, international doctoral candidates and post-docs will have the opportunity to be actively involved in current teaching- and research projects of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. "The multilateral scientific and intercultural experiences of these new academics did not receive enough recognition and were drawn on too little in the past", says Susanne Wille, Division Head of the International Office. "At the same time they are a great treasure and an opportunity for the internationalisation of the university". The Bauhaus Research School is a central academic institution that advises and supports doctoral candidates and post-docs.
The International Office coordinates and advises the almost 200 cooperations with partner universities worldwide and understands itself as a centre of competence for the cross-sectional task of the internationalisation of the university. The area of "International Study and Graduation", which is housed there, advises international doctoral candidates, academics and artists, coordinates social and administrative measures for quick integration and is responsible for the admission of international doctoral candidates.
