Concerts with Alice Merton and Tim Bendzko: zdf@bauhaus at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

The zdf@bauhaus concert series is continuing at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and German pop musicians Alice Merton and Tim Bendzko have been invited to Weimar to participate. The concert recordings will take place in the lower lobby of the University Library and Auditorium building at Steubenstraße 6. 3sat will be broadcasting the two concert premieres, presented by Jo Schück, on its programme on 7 and 14 December. The tickets for the concerts – limited to 100 per concert – will be available online from 22 October 2019 at 9 pm Around half of the tickets will initially be open to university members only.

The first concert will be performed by Alice Merton, who initially created a buzz with her song »No Roots«. Her debut album »Mint« was released in January 2019 and reached number two on the German album chart. The singer, who grew up in Canada and other countries, can currently be seen as a judge on the latest season of the TV show »The Voice of Germany«. Next on the stage will be the German singer-songwriter Tim Bendzko, who gained national fame with his 2011 song »Nur noch kurz die Welt retten« and his Bundesvision Song Contest win. This Berlin-born singer released his latest album »Filter« in October.

Concert series at the birthplace of Bauhaus
Professor Winfried Speitkamp, President of the University, is delighted that ZDF will be showcasing the modern Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: »We are a modern university undertaking research, design and teaching on the site of the historic Bauhaus. We tackle tradition, but also devote ourselves to the challenges of the present. I am particularly delighted that ZDF wants to showcase students’ current work as part of the concerts.« Another key part of this collaboration is involvement from the university’s students, who are helping to shape the new concert series’ art and design concept as part of an interdisciplinary team. Under the guidance of Gabriel Dörner, a lecturer in the Faculty of Art and Design, the students are working with University President Professor Winfried Speitkamp, the responsible ZDF music editor and the concert series director to develop the set, design and event planning.

A first concert evening as part of the series took place in July at the Geschwister-Scholl-Straße campus, featuring Austrian band Wanda and singer-songwriter Nico Santos. Further concerts from the series will be organised at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the future. When identifying its new event venue, the ZDF made a conscious decision to select Weimar’s lively university as somewhere to further develop the format with students and teachers in the place where Bauhaus was born.

Background:
The zdf@bauhaus concert series has been broadcast on 3sat since 2011. Concerts by well-known artists and promising newcomers are supplemented with presentations and interviews. Clueso, Cro, BAP, Silbermond and Passenger have all performed in past years. The concert is a ZDF in-house production.
