Architecture Students Successful at National Competition for Cooperative Housing Construction
Two final theses by students from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar were honoured in the national 2024/2025 »JOANES-Preis« competition for cooperative housing construction.
Henrike Gosda and Felix Iburg, students in the Master of Architecture degree programme, impressed with their joint thesis, »Ein genossenschaftliches Haus an der Fliegersiedlung«, and are among the four most promising designs to be further developed in subsequent workshops. The jury recognised the work as an exemplary contribution to future-oriented, community-focussed housing design built above supermarkets. The design was supervised by Prof. Verena von Beckerath, (Professorship of Housing Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar), Christina Köchling (Junior Professorship of Building Design Theory at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar), Prof. Jörg Leeser (Department of Entwerfen im städtischen Kontext at the Peter Behrens School of Arts Düsseldorf) and Avital Greenshpon (Professorship of Housing Design).
Marlene Dodenhof's »Wohnen an der Fliegersiedlung – Schwellenräume zwischen Individualität und Gemeinschaft« Master's thesis on architecture was one of 18 outstanding works recognised for its design and conceptual quality. She was supervised by Prof. Verena von Beckerath, (Professorship of Housing Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar), Prof. Jörg Leeser (Department of Entwerfen im städtischen Kontext at the Peter Behrens School of Arts Düsseldorf) and Charlotte Pfrommer (Professorship of Design and Architectural Space).
The »JOANES-Preis« is being awarded for the first time this year for outstanding cooperative housing designs. The goal is to promote innovative concepts for community-oriented housing.
The jury for this year's »JOANES-Preis« was impressed by the extraordinarily high standard of the work submitted. The originality of the ideas and their practical feasibility were both taken into account for the selection. A total of 195 submissions were made.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on 4 November 2025 at the Aedes Architekturforum in Berlin. The ranking of the awards and the distribution of the prize money will be announced publicly at the event.
