»Alles ist Ressource« [»Everything is a resource«] – students show how valuable our wastewater is
Environmental engineer Simon Mehling invites visitors to the »summaery2019« to »Come donate your P«. The interactive »P-Bank« toilet allows interested visitors to see for themselves how phosphorus is extracted from urine. All those wishing to learn more about » new alternative sanitation systems« (NASS) and methods of wastewater recycling are warmly invited to attend the lectures and project exhibition taking place at Marienstraße 9 (LÜCKE) on 12–13 July.
Phosphorus is a finite resource that disappears down the drain every day unused. Students and instructors at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are calling for an end to this waste: »With the P-Bank, we want to show the public how easy it is to recycle wastewater«, explains project manager Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Londong from the Chair of Urban Water Management and Sanitation. The principle is both simple and ingenious: »We want to re-use the nutrients that we take in with our food as fertiliser. The phosphorus contained in urine must be separated from the water and harmful substances for this«, Londong continues. At the »summaery2019«, the scientists will explain which technical processes the P-Bank uses and how innovative sanitary systems work.
According to the motto of »Alles ist Ressource, nichts ist Abwasser« [»Everything is a resource, nothing is wastewater«], the various stakeholders involved in the project invite all those interested to a marketplace with student activities and stands on the P-Bank from noon on 12 and 13 July 2019. A lecture forum will also be held on Friday, 12 July (5–7 pm) to examine various aspects of novel sanitary systems, such as wastewater treatment and energy generation.
