»~100«: product design students present theses for summaery2019
The dissertations presented cover a wide variety of subjects and address diverse current issues. From a design for the interior of a self-driving vehicle, to senior-friendly designs for public spaces, to a magazine and objects on the subject of »female lust«, concepts, drafts and finished products are being exhibited.
Eileen Krüger asks herself how much living space she can fit into her station wagon, for example, and designs an entire furniture series as part of her bachelor’s thesis: her »Kulturkonfekt« comprises a 140 cm wide bed frame, a table, a chair and an adaptable storage system. When dismantled, everything can be stowed in the boot of a station wagon. The furniture’ tubular steel frames can rapidly be assembled without any tools thanks to connectors with spring clips. The wooden parts are simply laid over the top or fitted together. Eileen Krüger wishes to declare war on »disposable furniture« as its production is harmful to the environment due to the short service life and the use of energy and raw materials. »Kulturkonfekt« moreover responds to society’s demands on »mobile workers« and offers a sustainable and lasting alternative for people who move frequently.
Leon Koonert has designed a new type of cane for the seeing impaired. Popular aids such as the conventional cane or designs with a camera, infrared or ultrasound warn of obstacles within a certain radius, but cannot detect things such as objects at head height and passing cyclists, and usually emit acoustic signals. This is where Koonert’s concept comes in, as it aims to provide orientation without putting excessive strain on users’ hearing and to foster the sense of touch. Leon Koonert’s »WIDE_CANE« proposal offers an alternative to audio assistants: each finger and the palm of the hand has its own vibrating segment, enabling an information spectrum similar to Braille. A total of six modules each with two statuses allow for 36 different characters. If there is an obstacle, »WIDE_CANE« not only triggers a signal but also simultaneously conveys information about the direction in which an object is located, for example.
