The possibility of taking a leave of absence during your semester abroad depends on your degree programme regulations.
Please contact your academic advisor or the examination Office to find out whether you are eligible for a leave of absence for your studies abroad.
If you are not (or cannot be) granted a leave of absence, you must pay the semester contribution on time in order to remain enrolled and be allowed to complete coursework abroad that can be recognised upon your return.
Regardless of whether you are eligible for a semester abroad under your study regulations, you can have your semester contribution (partially) refunded.
The refund process and application are handled by the Studierendenwerk Thüringen (Thuringia Student Services).
At this point, here is an important note from the Thuringia Student Services that is often overlooked:
‘Students who have already collected their German semester ticket (Deutschlandticket) are not eligible for a refund of the semester contribution.’
