Application Procedure

Application Procedure

STEP 1 | The right partner university

When searching for a suitable partner university, you need to consider the following factors:

  •  does my faculty have a partnership relationship with my chosen university?
  • Is my degree programme eligible for an exchange with the partner university?

Please refer to the faculty-specific exchange programme announcements and/or the "Study Abroad Search Portal" to clarify these questions.

The International Counsellor at your faculty will also be happy to advise you.

Please note:
The annual application round is valid for the entire next academic year (i.e. the next winter semester and the summer semester after next). You should therefore check early on whether and how studying abroad fits into your study plans.

STEP 2 | The application

Once you have decided on a partner university, you can apply for a place to study abroad in one of two application rounds.

1st application round

once a year starting in November via the " Study Abroad Portal"

2nd application round

once a year, following the 1st application round via the " Study Abroad Portal"

The 2nd application round is aimed at people who either did not receive a place in the 1st application round or missed the 1st application round. The selection process is the same as the 1st application round.

Please note:
In both application rounds you can indicate a first and a second stay wish. We strongly recommend that you specify two preferred universities in order to increase your chances of getting your preferred study abroad place.

STEP 3 | Selection at your Bauhaus faculty

After you have submitted your application documents in full and on time in the "Study Abroad Portal", the International Office will forward them to your Bauhaus faculty for an academic evaluation.

The supervising Bauhaus professor of the university of your choice(s) will review your documents and decide on the allocation of the available places.

Please note:
As the number of exchange places per partner university is limited, the selection takes place in a comparative procedure. The criteria applied are academic excellence, language skills and the capacities at the partner universities.

STEP 4 | The place offer

When the selection at your Bauhaus faculty has been finalised, the International Office will inform you of the result by e-mail.

1. positive decision

If the decision is positive, you will receive an offer of a place by e-mail (to the address you provided in the online application form), which you can accept or decline within 6 days in the "Study Abroad Portal".

Please note:
If you do not accept your place offer in time, you will lose your entitlement to the place. Once you have accepted your place offer, please inform yourself immediately about the application modalities and deadlines at the partner university. Some partner universities have very early deadlines and/or require special documents with the application. You are responsible for researching this information.

2. negative decision

In the event of a negative decision, you can reapply in the 2nd application round. If you do not receive an offer of a place in the 2nd application round, please contact the International Counsellor in your faculty.

STEP 5 | Nomination at the partner university

After you have accepted your place offer, the International Office will nominate you as an exchange student at the partner university.

Please note:
The time of your nomination by us and the time of acceptance by the partner university depend on whether you have applied for an exchange in the winter semester (nomination takes place between January and August) or in the summer semester (nomination takes place between September and December).

We will inform you of your nomination by e-mail.

1. positive decision

Once your nomination has been accepted, you will receive all the necessary information from the partner university about the next steps on the way to your study abroad programme.

2. negative decision

It is very rare for a nomination to be rejected. In such a case, please contact outgoing[at]uni-weimar.de immediately so that we can find a solution together.

STEP 6 | The self-administered application at the partner university

After we have nominated you as an exchange student at the partner university, you must apply to the partner university independently. Your application will then be reviewed by the partner university.

Please note:
Here, too, you should get an overview of which documents and certificates you need for the application at an early stage; for example, your “Abitur certificate”, which might have been sufficient as proof of language proficiency for your application to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, is generally not accepted by the partner university.

STEP 7 | Selection at the partner university

Once the selection procedure at the partner university has been completed, you will be informed by the partner by e-mail.

1. positive decision

Congratulations! The organisational preparations for your stay abroad can now begin.

2. negative decision

It is unlikely that your application will be rejected. However, if you receive a rejection, please contact outgoing[at]uni-weimar.de so that we can find a solution together.
