Air pollution control

Course Aim

The aim of the course, divided in biological and mechanical flue gas treatment, is to give a broad overview on the current state of the art technology for air pollution control. Starting with fundamentals on the characterization of dust particles, the course teaches the competences to assess the detrimental effects of air pollution on health and environment. Course participants learn to dimension gas cleaning facilities and choose between different technologies according to the given boundary conditions and overall functionality of the system.

  • Course responsability: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Kraft
  • Teachers: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Kraft (biological pollution control) and Dr.-Ing. Elske Linß (mechanical pollution control)
  • Compulsory elective course: 6 ECTS with 4 SWS
  • The course is held in each summer semester.
  • Examination: Written exam for 60 minutes (mechanical air pollution control, 50%) / oral exam (biological air pollution control, 50%)

Course Content

The course focuses on:

  • Formation and toxicity of organic air pollutants and contaminants
  • Granulometric characterization of dust particles, fundamentals of pulmonary transport mechanisms
  • Olfactometry – fundamentals, propagation of gases and smells
  • Legislation on health, worker protection and environmental safety
  • Biological processes for the treatment of air pollution, technologies and facilities (Filter, scrubber, packed-bed reactor)
  • Fundamentals of and technologies for mechanical dust removal, balancing an dimensioning of dust removal facilities
  • Data and calculation examples for the dimensioning and evaluation of the effectivity of flue gas cleaning technologies
