New research project: "Liquid Clay"
The new research project, “Liquid Clay: pourable clay as a sustainable solid clay construction method”, will start on 1 April 2026 at the Chair of Structural Design and Structural Engineering.
Starting 1 April 2026, the Chair of Structural Design and Structural Engineering will work on the project “Liquid Clay: pourable clay as a sustainable solid clay construction method”, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space under the WIR! programme – Change through Innovation in the Region (WIR! Alliance GOLEHM Initiative).
The aim of the project is to investigate the extent to which clay can be developed into a flowable building material that can be processed in a manner similar to concrete. Thanks to its pourable consistency, clay is intended to be integrated into existing concrete processing infrastructures – as an ecological alternative to conventional load-bearing building materials. Particular focus is placed on the composition of the mixture: The aim is to develop a clay building material without chemical stabilisers. In addition to industrially scalable processing, Liquid Clay opens up new design possibilities, for example for functional surfaces with acoustic properties. At the same time, the project addresses key challenges in the construction industry such as resource conservation, CO₂ reduction and the strengthening of regional value chains in clay construction, particularly in Central Germany.
