The Institute
The Bauhaus Institute for Experimental Architecture (bauhaus.ifex) is one of two institutes within the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. It addresses current challenges in building and urban planning through experimental research strategies and full-scale prototypical implementations. It is focused on climate-neutral construction methods and the digitalisation of planning processes.
Together with the Ethiopian Institute for Architecture, Building and City Development in Addis Ababa, bauhaus.ifex runs the joint teaching and research laboratory “Emerging City Lab” (ECL-AA). There, new methods of planning and building are developed in the context of dynamic processes of change (population growth and rapid urbanisation).
Research activities are integrated into coursework through the two research-based and application-oriented Master’s programmes based at bauhaus.ifex: “Digital Technologies in Architecture and Design” (DTAD), formerly MediaArchitecture, and “Integrated Urban Development and Design” (IUDD).
