The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar set itself a clear focal point for 2024: »Demokratie stärken« (strengthening democracy). Throughout the year, the initiative has provided support for numerous projects that focus on fostering democracy, participating in democratic processes, and that place these topics at the centre of teaching content and research projects. During this year’s elections in Thuringia, this theme emphasised how important an open-minded society and a strong democracy are for today's educational institutions the essential role these factors play in their identity. Dr. Ulrike Kuch, Vice President for Social Transformation, began and led this year's initiative.

Vor 20 Jahren wurde das Institut für Europäische Urbanistik (IfEU) an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar mit dem Ziel gegründet, interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf städtische und ländliche Räume zu bündeln. Auch heute noch versteht sich das IfEU als interdisziplinäre Plattform für die Verständigung über drängende gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen und die Entwicklung gemeinsamer Zielvorstellungen und Strategien im Sinne einer sozial und ökologisch gerechten Stadt- und Raumentwicklung, aber auch als lebendiger Ort des offenen Miteinanders und der gemeinsamen Identifikation.

Wohnraum ist zu einem wertvollen Gut in Weimar geworden, ist die Bevölkerung in den vergangenen Jahren doch weiter gewachsen. Wie sieht aktuell die Situation auf dem Wohnungsmarkt aus? Wo gibt es zusätzlichen Bedarf? Und was kann getan werden, um ihn künftig besser zu decken?

Experimenting, exchanging ideas and learning with enthusiasm: The newly founded Science Discovery Centre at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Marienstraße 7 welcomes children and youth to broaden their knowledge in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and gain professional inspiration. The Science Discovery Centre Weimar will be opening its doors to the public for the first time from 6 to 11 pm as part of the Long Night of Sciences on 15 November 2024.

From 13 to 20 November, the »Trans Pride Flag« will be displayed on the balcony of the Main Building to express solidarity with the trans communities: The »Transgender Day of Remembrance« (TDoR) on 20 November commemorates victims of transphobic violence worldwide. The campaign was initiated by the StuKo (Student Government)’s »QueerYMR«.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s interdisciplinary research workshop »Dimensionen des ruhenden Verkehrs« (»Dimensions of stationary traffic«) is launching its lecture and workshop series entitled »Was ist das Auto, wenn es nicht fährt?« (»What is the car when it’s not driving?«) starting on 18 November. This series will invite exploration of the phenomenon of stationary traffic from various scientific perspectives. On three evenings in the winter semester of 2024/25, experts from the fields of transport planning, social sciences and media studies will present their findings and engage in discussions about them during workshops on the mornings that follow.

On Monday, 11 November, 2024, the top entries of the photo competition »READING THE WORLD« were awarded prizes at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The competition, organised by the International Office, sought photographs depicting locations of knowledge, reading and learning, either abroad or in Weimar, ideally showcasing the students’ favourite spots. Some 80 students from countries such as Chile, Mongolia, Iran, Australia, Turkey and India participated.

From 6 to 9 November 2024, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar hosted the first meeting of the Bauhaus4EU Student Council. Student representatives from all nine countries within the Bauhaus4EU university alliance met to lay the foundation for active and sustainable collaboration while formulating shared visions.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Materials Research and Testing Laboratory Weimar (MFPA) have joined the »Stiftung für Technologie, Innovation und Forschung Thüringen« to found the Science Discovery Centre. Specialising in construction, the environment, and computer science, the new location is being developed on the ground floor of Marienstraße 7B for STEM enthusiasts and students interested in science and technology from the 4th grade and up.

Die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar beteiligt sich vom 7. bis 9. November 2024 an der diesjährigen Europäischen Leitmesse für Denkmalpflege, Restaurierung und Altbausanierung »denkmal«. Mehrere Professuren und Institutionen der Architektur und Urbanistik sowie Bau- und Umweltingenieurwissenschaften stellen ausgewählte Forschungsprojekte rund um die Themen Bestand und Kulturerbe vor. Die denkmal-Messe findet im zweijährigen Turnus in Leipzig statt und richtet sich an die nationale und internationale Fachwelt.

Der Arbeitskreis Stadterneuerung an deutschsprachigen Hochschulen und das Institut für Europäische Urbanistik an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar laden zur Tagung »Zivilgesellschaftliches Engagement und Stadterneuerung« am 28. und 29. November 2024 in Weimar ein.

Vom 15. bis zum 24. November 2024 stellt Manuel Aust unter dem Titel »IDEAL« fotografische Arbeiten in der Marktstraße 6 in Weimar aus. Die Ausstellung lädt dazu ein, alltägliche, oft übersehene räumliche Situationen neu zu betrachten und kritisch zu hinterfragen.

In der kommenden Veranstaltung der Weimarer Stadtgespräche geht es am 11. November 2024 um die Frage, welche Transformationskonzepte und -strategien in der Urbanistik diskutiert werden und wie sie am Beispiel der urbanen Zentren in Thüringen wie Weimar, Erfurt oder Jena umgesetzt werden könnten.

On Friday 15 November 2024, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be a number of events for the Weimar and Weimarer Land Long Night of Sciences. From 6 pm to midnight, visitors can experiment, discover and learn about how science works. They can also enjoy presentations, exhibitions, lectures, and interactive experiments. Guided tours help visitors imagine what studying could look like in the future.

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students are establishing a meeting space in the heart of Suhl’s city centre. On 5 and 6 November 2024, students will be collecting past, present, and future urban society stories during the pottery market in the hopes of engaging with local citizens. Various events are planned, including a storytelling café and a panel discussion.

Die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und die Materialforschungs- und Prüfanstalt (MFPA) Weimar laden Jungforscher*innen aus Mittelthüringen zur Teilnahme an Deutschlands bekanntestem Nachwuchswettbewerb ein. Die Anmeldung ist bis zum 30. November 2024 unter www.jugend-forscht.de möglich. Der 30. Regionalwettbewerb »Jugend forscht Mittelthüringen« findet am 26. Februar 2025 auf dem Campus der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar statt.
