Semester Contribution

The good news is that the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar does not charge students tuition fees. However, you will have to pay a so called semester contribution. The academic year in Germany is divided into two semesters – the winter semester (from 1 October to 31 March) and the summer semester (from 1 April to 30 September). By paying the semester contribution, you automatically re-register for the next semester. But be aware of the deadline for re-registration!

Please note that the university does not accept cash payment of the semester contribution. You will need to transfer the money electronically from a bank account at a German bank to the University.

Student ID [thoska]

Your student ID is a chip card called “thoska”. You should have it on your person at all times. With your student ID, you can borrow books from the university libraries, make photocopies, pay for meals at the student cafeterias, and travel by train throughout Thuringia at no charge. If you apply for access to certain rooms and buildings on campus in advance, you can also use your thoska as a key card.

Off campus, your student ID allows you to obtain concession rates on tickets to cinemas, museums and theatre performances.

In order to pay with your thoska at the university, you must top it up first. There are two ways to do this – either by topping it up with cash from a self-service thoska terminal or transferring money to your thoska from a debit card terminal.

Your thoska is only valid until the end of the current semester (the expiration date is printed on the card). As soon as you have re-registered for the next semester, you can extend the validity of your card at the thoska terminal yourself.

thoska-Terminal

The terminals, at which you can extend the validity of your thoska for another semester, are located in the Campus.office and at the Mensa am Park, Marienstraße 15, near the coffee bar, next to the red armchairs and small tables. This is where you will also find the terminals at which you can top up your thoska with cash. Another terminal is located in the foyer of Coudraystraße 7. You can transfer money to your thoska with a debit card (EC card) at the terminal located on the ground floor of the University Library at Steubenstraße 6.

If you lose your thoska or receive an error message when photocopying, contact the help desk at the Campus.Office immediately.
