Elective Modules

The Choice is Yours

Elective modules are a specific feature of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and enable students to look beyond the confines of their own discipline and thus take courses in other departments, faculties or even universities. In the spirit of the Bauhaus idea, interdisciplinarity is thus made possible and collaborative work is encouraged.

However, some general conditions must be adhered when taking elective modules, which we have compiled for you here:

Rules for Elective Modules

  1. An elective module may consist of
    (a) a complete module with at least six ECTS
    (b) a single course with at least six ECTS, or
    (c) several courses that add up to at least six ECTS credits.*

  2. If the elective module consists of several courses, the courses taken must have taken place within the same semester.

  3. If the elective module is composed of several courses and more than six ECTS are acquired in total, then the grades of the individual courses are weighted according to their ECTS. If more than the six ECTS required for an elective module are acquired, only six ECTS are nevertheless credited.

  4. Courses from all faculties of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, interdisciplinary Bauhaus.Modules and courses from the Franz Liszt School of Music can be taken as elective modules without further agreement. Courses from other universities require prior review and approval by the Media Management Course Guidance (see in the contacts).

  5. Language courses and courses offered by the Department of Media Management cannot be included as elective modules or parts of an elective module. Interdisciplinary Bauhaus.Modules, which are carried out with the participation of one or more professorships of the Department of Media Management, require prior review by the Media Management Course Guidance.
  6. In all partial courses of an elective module, a graded performance record must be submitted. Pure proof of participation without grading is not recognised. Only the credit points earned are relevant for the recognition of an elective module; the number of semester hours per week is irrelevant.

  7. Courses from the Bachelor's programme require prior review and approval by the Media Management Course Guidance. Additional performance agreements can be made to ensure the suitability of the course for the Master's degree programme Media Management.

  8. All modules not designated as elective modules must be recognised as such by the Course Guidance. The students themselves must ensure that the letter of recognition is sent to the examinations office of the Faculty of Media for inclusion in the electronic grading system.

  9. Certificates of achievement at other universities can be recognised if they are equivalent to the Master's degree in Media Management. This must be checked in advance by the Media Management Course Guidance. The students themselves must ensure that the letter of recognition is issued by the external universities. The letter of recognition should contain the following information: Name and matriculation of the student; name of the lecturer and the university; title of the course (is it from the BA or MA programme?), number of ECTS completed and the grade. The letter needs to be signed personally by the lecturer.
IMPORTANT: Please contact the lecturers and the staff for study matters (e.g. Student Office, Department for Studies and Teaching, Enrolment Office) of the external universities in advance to find out about the necessary formal regulations (e.g. guest or secondary auditors).

*Courses that are not listed as a joint module in the course catalogue can also be combined to form an elective module. An internal subject connection between the courses that goes beyond the umbrella topic of media or management is not needed.
