In the Photography Workshop, students work with analogue and digital techniques to create artistic, creative and documentary photographs. They develop concepts, explore the effects of light and space, and produce photo series from shooting through to presentation. The workshop spans two floors and brings together studio work, darkroom processes and digital image editing in close proximity.
At the heart of the facility is the 90-square-metre photography studio. Skylights provide natural light, and the room can be completely darkened if required. This allows for precise lighting conditions or experimental setups.
The equipment includes:
The studio is used to create portraits, still lifes, staged scenes and experimental visual spaces.
In the photo labs, students develop black-and-white and colour film, produce enlargements and experiment with classic, experimental and historical photographic processes. Analogue and digital processes can be integrated.
The photo labs offer:
Workstations are available in digital pools for digital image processing and the further processing of analogue image material. Here, students edit their photographs and prepare them for various media.
The technical equipment includes:
With the aid of a cross-workstation colour management system, students can produce colour-accurate photo prints. Where required, these are mounted onto various backing materials using a laminating machine.
Students of the Faculty of Art and Design can lend technical equipment for photographic projects. The photography studio offers a selection of professional equipment and provides assistance with its use.
The following equipment is available for loan:
In the photography studio, students develop their own photographic approaches. They work conceptually, experimentally or documentarily, combining analogue and digital techniques. In addition to independent artistic projects, the studio also produces photographic reproductions of drawings, objects and installations.
The workshop also provides support with the photographic documentation of work, which is often used in presentations, portfolios or final projects.
Jonas Tegtmeyer, Master Photographer, and Alexander Rutz, Graduate Designer (Visual Communication), supervise the students. They advise on the implementation of concepts and offer introductions to lab and digital techniques.
