IUDD alumni win Europan 18
The two IUDD graduates Agustín Azar and Egor Gaydukov, together with Uliana Zhomnir (M.Sc. Architecture graduate from Bauhaus University) and Nicolás Schusterman (architecture student at the University of Buenos Aires), have won the prestigious European competition Europan 18 with their design ‘Care Blanket’.
The team’s design won over the jury in the Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country, Spain) site selection process with a clear, socially and environmentally focused strategy for the regeneration of apartment blocks dating from the 1960s and 1970s. ‘Care Blanket’ proposes a modular façade system that upgrades the energy efficiency of existing buildings using resource-efficient, prefabricated elements. Cork and timber panels improve insulation, new balconies create additional outdoor space, and the roofs are adapted for solar energy and rainwater harvesting. The ground floors are developed into communal infrastructure for the neighbourhood. The approach is scalable, can be applied at both building and neighbourhood level, and actively involves residents in the design process.
