Seven Reasons Why International Students Should also Run for Committee Positions

1) Give International Students a Voice

Did you know that international students make up a third of our student population? As an »international«, you have a unique perspective that can help enrich our campus community. By running for a position on a Student Representative Committee, you can ensure that international students have a voice and that they are equally represented in decision-making processes.

2)Step by Step

Nominating yourself can seem a bit intimidating at first. However, it’s important to remember that changes happen over time. By taking on this role, you can make a big difference at our university – one small step at a time. You don’t need to have all the solutions ready on day one. You’ll learn how to do the job over time and gain confidence and experience.

3) Scholarship Eligibility

Running for a Student Council position can open up possibilities for receiving scholarships and financial support. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers scholarships and financial aid for students who are active members of campus life and who advocate for their fellow students through committee work. Some of these scholarships, for instance the President’s Scholarship, are specifically designated for international students.

4) Boost Your Resume

Getting involved in Student Representative Committees can also have practical benefits for your future career. It shows that you are proactive, dedicated and able to take action. It can also help you develop important communication, leadership and problem-solving skills that will prove valuable in any future job.

5) Fight for Equality

As an »international«, your work on Student Representative Committees can play an important role in fighting racism on campus. By speaking out against discriminatory practices and raising awareness on understanding cultural differences, you will be helping to create a more inclusive and tolerant community and a safer environment for all students.

6) Be the First to Know

M18 parties, government funding and new initiatives: Whatever is going on at the university, chances are you will be among the first to know as a member of Student Council. Getting involved is also a great way to learn about the local culture and getting to know the city better.

7) Make Unexpected Friendships

Student Representative Committees give you the opportunity to escape your everyday environment and to meet students whose backgrounds are different from your own. Build long-term friendships that transcend cultural differences. By working together on shared goals and interests, you can help make campus life more harmonious.
