On the occasion of the General Assembly on Wednesday, 19 October, two new publications on international architectural heritage research will be presented for the first time at the International Heritage Centre of the Bauhaus University Weimar.
Leila Javanmardi presents the volume "Modern Heritage in the MENA Region", published by Bauhaus Universitätsverlag. It is based on an international conference held by doctoral students at the Bauhaus-Universität in 2018 and contains twelve contributions on modernist architecture, heritage under capitalism, the appropriate conversion of modernist buildings, and the preservation and sustainability of historical monuments in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa. A major benefit of the event was that younger researchers, for whom an exchange would never be possible due to the political situation in their countries, were able to come into direct contact with each other in Weimar.
The second book, published by Thelem-Verlag in Dresden, is the result of a teaching-research project in Tashkent funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The bilingual volume presented by Jens Jordan, "Baudenkmale in Taschkent. Contributions to a Monument Topography" presents - based on the successful German monument topographies - the actual and potential architectural monuments and ensembles in the old city of the capital of Uzbekistan. Precisely because the social transformation there is currently dealing with the building stock in a very radical way, the work carried out by young Uzbek scholars under the guidance of experienced German historians is already of great value as a source.
The first publication of the project "Stadtwende. Civic Engagement and Renewal of Historic Centres in the GDR and East Germany" will also be presented alongside various research projects from current heritage research ranging from musicology and architectural heritage to living in monuments.
Interested parties are cordially invited to attend.
