The University Council is appointed for a four-year term and operates in a similar way to supervisory boards in commercial enterprises, holding both advisory and supervisory roles. Major internal university decisions cannot be made without the Council’s approval or confirmation. Issuing statements on target and performance agreements with the state of Thuringia, principles of internal resource allocation, and decisions on university annual accounts are all responsibilities of the University Council.

The Presidium also belongs to the University Council and has an advisory vote as well as the right to make proposals. The Equal Opportunity Officer, Diversity Officer, Staff Council chairperson, and a (StuKo) Student Government representative are permitted to attend University Council meetings; they also have the right to speak and make proposals at meetings.
Der Hochschulrat gemäß § 34 Thüringer Hochschulgesetz trägt an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar die Bezeichnung Universitätsrat. Er gibt Empfehlungen zur Profilbildung der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und zur Schwerpunktsetzung in Forschung und Lehre sowie zur Weiterentwicklung des Studienangebots. Darüber hinaus wirkt er in der Findungskommission sowie in der Hochschulversammlung an der Wahl und Abwahl des Präsidenten/der Präsidentin und des Kanzlers/der Kanzlerin mit. Der Universitätsrat entscheidet über den Wirtschaftsplan (Bestätigung, Änderungen). Darüber hinaus entscheidet er im Einvernehmen mit dem Präsidium, welche Stelle den Jahresabschluss zu prüfen hat und nimmt die Entlastung des Präsidiums vor. Stellungnahmen zur Grundordnung, Stellungnahmen vor dem Abschluss von Ziel- und Leistungsvereinbarungen mit dem Ministerium sowie die Entgegennahme des Jahresberichts des Präsidiums sind Aufgabe des Universitätsrats. Über seine vielfältigen Aufgaben berichtet der Universitätsrat dem Ministerium und dem Senat jährlich über seine Tätigkeit. Zur Wahrung seine Aufgaben hat der Universitätsrat das Recht von den Organen und Gremien die nötigen Unterlagen einzuholen, einzusehen und zu prüfen.
