German Skills for Exchange Students

RECOMMENDATION
B1 level as per CEFR

FAQs about the German language proof

Do I need German language skills to study at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar?

The answer to this question depends largely on the study program at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar that you have chosen. Please inform yourself in advance on the webpages of our 4 faculties whether special language skills are required.

Even if your selected courses should be in English, German language skills are of great advantage. Most of your contacts at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will speak English. However, everyday communication (e.g. shopping, on the bus, or at the doctor's office) is usually in German. For better orientation, understanding and integration, we therefore recommend that you learn German in any case in advance of your study abroad.

What if my German language level is below B1?

It is no problem if your German language level is below B1; this obligation also applies if you do not require German language skills for your studies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

If your German language level is below B1, you are obliged to participate in the German Compact Language Course offered by the Language Center (Link for registering: see right side on this page) at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (free of charge).
To register for the course, you have to take an online placement test. The course takes place directly before the start of the regular semester (in March or in September). Please keep this period in mind when planning your arrival.

Do I have to prove my German language skills?

Yes, all applicants have to indicate their German language level when applying as an exchange student at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Applicants without knowledge of German should observe the following information on proving their German language skills when applying.

Which proofs of German language proficiency are accepted when I apply?

Acceptable proofs are e.g. language certificates of a completed or started German language course at your home university (B1 level), a DAF certificate, a screenshot of the free German language test of the Goethe-Institut or a screenshot of your OLS language test (for ERASMUS students). If you are unsure, please feel free to contact us.

Your language level as per CERF must be evident on the proof; you are welcome to provide us with a translation aid in case of country-specific level information.

If you do not (yet) have any knowledge of German, it is sufficient to submit proof of registration (e.g. a screenshot) for the German Compact Language Course at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar with your application.

If you are a native speaker, please write a short statement and upload it to the application portal.

What else is important?

All exchange students, regardless of their language level, are cordially invited to participate in the above-mentioned German Compact Language Course before beginning their studies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Your first language course at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is free of charge.

In addition to improving or refreshing your language skills, you can use the participation in the language course to network with other exchange students and participate in the Welcome Program for exchange students during the course.
