Financial Support for Stays Abroad in Europe

Stays at universities in other European countries for continuing education purposes (for administrative or academic staff) and for teaching purposes (for academic staff) can be supported through the Erasmus+ programme. To be eligible for the Erasmus+ programme, the stay abroad must last at least 2 days and is usually up to one week.
As a rule, funding is provided for up to one week. Language courses in other European countries are funded for up to 2 weeks. The subsidy is divided into

  • a flat-rate per diem residence allowance (usually no allowance is paid for Saturdays and Sundays) and
  • a one-time flat-rate travel allowance, which is based on the distance to the destination.

A higher funding can be provided through sustainable travel (Green Travel).

Flat rates by European destination country

The European destination countries for Erasmus stays are divided into four groups. The flat rates are as follows:

Country group 1: EUR 180 per day

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden

and as a partner country United Kingdom

Country group 2: EUR 160 per day
Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Malta, Latvia, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain
Country group 3: EUR 140 per day
Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, Northern Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey

Sustainable travel (Green Travel)

"Green travel" means travel that uses low-emission means of transport such as bus, train or bicycle for the majority of the journey (at least 50% in total).

Ship, plane, car/e-car or motorbike do not count as a sustainable means of transport. Even if CO2 emissions are compensated, planes are not considered sustainable means of transport. In exceptions, journeys by ship are considered "green travel" if the location can otherwise only be reached by plane (e.g. Ireland or Iceland). If a car is used in carpooling, this can be recognised as sustainable.

If longer time is needed for the trip due to the use of sustainable means of transport, funding can be granted for up to 4 additional days - as long as this was stated and justified accordingly when applying for funding and the costs are not covered by regular funding.

Travel support

Travel costs are subsidised on a flat-rate basis throughout Europe based on the straight-line distance between the point of departure and destination. The distance is determined by a European Commission instrument (distance calculator).

Information for People With Disabilities and Employees With Child(ren)

If you incur additional or increased costs in connection with the requested staff mobility due to an impairment (chronic illness or disability) or accompanying children that are not covered by the regular funding, you have the option of submitting a real cost application to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through the International Office. The application deadline is three months before travelling. Please contact us for advice!
