Stays at universities in other European countries for continuing education purposes (for administrative or academic staff) and for teaching purposes (for academic staff) can be supported through the Erasmus+ programme. To be eligible for the Erasmus+ programme, the stay abroad must last at least 2 days and is usually up to one week.
As a rule, funding is provided for up to one week. Language courses in other European countries are funded for up to 2 weeks. The subsidy is divided into
Additional funding can be provided through sustainable travel.
The European destination countries for Erasmus stays are divided into four groups. The flat rates are as follows:
Country group 1: EUR 180 per day |
---|
Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom |
Country group 2: EUR 160 per day |
Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Germany |

"Green travel" means travel that uses low-emission means of transport such as bus, train or carpooling for the majority of the journey. There is no detailed list of possible means of transport in the Erasmus+ programme. For example, trips by ship are also considered "green travel" if the location can otherwise only be reached by plane (e.g. Ireland, Iceland, etc.).
Travelling by plane is not considered sustainable transport, even if CO2 emissions are compensated.
If longer time is needed for the trip due to the use of sustainable transport, funding can be granted for up to 4 additional days - provided that this was indicated accordingly when applying for funding.
Travel costs are subsidised on a flat-rate basis throughout Europe based on the straight-line distance between the point of departure and destination. The distance is determined by a European Commission instrument (distance calculator).
Separate flat rates for green travel are expected to be paid from 09/2023. Until then, it will only be taken into account via per diems for extended travel time, if applicable.
