Jun.-Prof. Dr. Julia Bee

Profile of the Chair

As the chair of Image Theory, my work focuses on assemblages and dispositives of images in between film, TV, art, photography and installations as well as everyday practices. This includes considering their affective and gendered dimensions, imagination, exchange, execution, and processes of power that arise through their circulation. Given that images are relational and process-like, research takes into account their migration and the inherent cultural dynamics along with how images change and constitute power relations.

Image Theory describes not only research about but also research with images (e.g., in the realm of documentary media and in the context of research creation and practised based research). Images are thus more than representations, they actively produce relations, processes, meaning practices and modes of perception and reception. Relations between images and viewers are therefore perceived as relational constitutive processes in between images and processes of perception.

With my own research, I am particularly interested in the inter- and intracultural power/relations of images and practices of images in a postcolonial frame. This also includes experimental imaged based practices like ethnographic practices and visual anthropology.
