Printing Workshop

In the printing workshop of the Faculty of Art and Design, students realise their creative and artistic ideas using analogue and digital printing processes. Covering 500 square metres, the workshop offers space for experimenting and implementing challenging printing projects under professional conditions.

The focus is on classic and modern printing techniques, which students test in practice and apply in project-related work. The workshop is a place for experimentation, technical precision and creative development.

Printing techniques

Various processes are used in the workshop, including:

  • Screen printing
  • Letterpress printing
  • Offset printing

These techniques open up a wide range of creative possibilities – from free artistic works to complex printed products. The printing workshop organises specialist and workshop courses that focus on the practical testing of various printing techniques. Students test the processes and hone their creative skills in the process.

Technical equipment

Extensive technical equipment is available for the projects, including:

  • Roland 200 sheet-fed offset press with two inking units (format 50 × 70 cm)
  • Electric proofing press for letterpress printing (max. format 50 x 70 centimetres)
  • Laser cutting and engraving system (max. format 70 x 100 centimetres)
  • Hand printing table (format A0)
  • Semi-automatic screen printing machine (max. format 70 x 100 centimetres)
  • »Epson 7800« print template printer (max. A1)
  • T-shirt carousel with four stations
  • Transfer press for flex and flock foils
  • Foil plotter
  • Electric stack cutting machine »Polar«
  • Manual cutting machine
  • Stapling machine
  • Adhesive binder
  • Folding machine
  • Various small devices for paper processing

In addition, the workshop has a selection of inks and papers that are used for the various printing processes.

Working in a study context

In the printing workshop, books, catalogues, posters and other printed products are created under real production conditions. Students develop their projects from the initial idea to the finished product, gaining practical experience with materials, processes and workflows. Students find the combination of different printing techniques particularly exciting, as it produces surprising and experimental work.

Technical support

Jörg von Stuckrad, head of the workshop and certified book and offset printer, supervises the work in the print workshop. He advises on the choice of printing techniques, supports the implementation of projects and teaches the safe use of machines, materials and processes.
