The Tenure Track Procedure

What does »tenure track« mean?

Tenure-Track means that the announcement of a limited junior professorship (W1) position is linked to a binding commitment: the prospect of a tenured higher ranking professorship position.

How do I apply?

Submit your application for advertised tenure track postions.

Be sure to check the hiring requirements set out by the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG §89).

What is my role as tenure track professor?

As a junior professor (W1), you are responsible for carrying out your teaching and research or art independently. This means, more specifically:

  • Developing your academic or scientific profile
  • Teaching with a reduced teaching load
  • Supervising final theses and doctoral dissertations
  • talking on a leadership position in the department
  • Carrying out academic governance tasks
  • Additional Requirements for Tenured Professorship

The position of junior professor belongs to the »Gruppe der Hochschullehrinnen und Hochschullehrer« . This applies in particular to participation on university committees (Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG §21)).

The academic title of  »Professor« is borne with the stipulation that appropriate reference is made to your status as a junior professor. After leaving academic employment, this academic title may no longer be used (Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG §98)).

How does the tenure-track procedure work?

As a tenure track professor, your initial position will be as a limited (non-permanent) W1 professor. Following a successful interim evaluation (typically after 3 years) and a tenure evaluation (typically takes place in the 6th year), the position is renewed as a full professorship (W3) position.

The interim evaluation tenure evaluation are based on a criteria-driven procedure established in the agreement on development goals. The procedure and criteria are outlined in the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Tenure Track Statute (Tenure Track Statute).

If the interim evaluation establish your eligibility for tenure, you will be supported during a transition yeat to realign your academic/ scientific profile.
