Digitaler Fingerabdruck

Weimarer Datenschutz-Professur beteiligt sich am Wettbewerb "Cryptographic Hash Algorithm Competition" des US-amerikanischen National Institute of Standards and Technology

Stefan Lucks, Professor für Mediensicherheit an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, hat gemeinsam mit amerikanischen Kollegen die Hashfunktion "Skein" (Englisch für "Gebinde" oder "Strang") entwickelt und für den Wettbewerb eingereicht.

In vielen wichtigen Sicherheitsprotokollen (z.B. für sicheres Surfen und Online-Banking) werden kryptographische Hashfunktionen eingesetzt, um die Authentizität und Integrität ("digitaler Fingerabdruck") von Daten zu schützen. In den letzten Jahren hat sich jedoch herausgestellt, dass fast alle in der Praxis eingesetzten Hashfunktionen tatsächlich unsicher sind. Deshalb hat das US-amerikanische NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) einen Wettbewerb für eine neue Standard-Hashfunktion ausgerufen.

Neben Professor Lucks gehören Niels Ferguson (Microsoft), der bekannte IT-Sicherheitsexperte Bruce Schneier (British Telecom), Doug Whiting (Hifn), Mihir Bellare (Universität San Diego, UCSD), Tadayoshi Kohno (Universität Washington), Jon Callas (PGP) und Jesse Walker (Intel) zum Skein-Entwicklerteam.
