The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university with a 160-year history rooted in the Bauhaus tradition, combining science and technology with art and design. This approach characterises the Faculties of Architecture & Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art & Design, and Media. In addition to their subject-specific functions, the faculties are also committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and to forging links between art, science and practice.
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Faculty of Media is currently inviting applications for the
W1 Junior Professorship in
»Service Management and Media«
beginning on April, 1, 2025.
The vacant junior professorship is part of the Department of Media Management at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Faculty of Media. The Department of Media Management is unique in the German university landscape, combining as it does both business administration and topics and methods from the field of economics, the emphasis being on interdisciplinary openness. Its conceptual ambition is intensively to examine the business and economic dynamics of media in the digital age. The professorships in the Department of Media Management pursue approaches to research and teaching from the fields of behavioral science and institutional economics, geared towards digitalization and the acquisition of knowledge for practical application.
The central subject area of the junior professorship is the examination of a wide spectrum of topics ranging from information and entertainment services to the planning and modeling of service processes and service-dominant logic. The junior professorship also addresses practical phenomena, as well as theoretical approaches and concepts such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, service design, service ecosystems and servitization in the media sector and in media markets. It attaches particular importance to the personal and knowledge-based services that are widespread in the media industry and their special features with regard to corporate management. There is thus a strong link between service economics on the one hand and the media industry on the other.
The successful applicant should have a relevant, above-average doctorate, a degree in business ad-ministration, management or economics and an in-depth interest in the field of media and digitalization. The candidate should preferably pursue a behavioral science approach and ideally have a background in service and media management or expertise in functional business administration theory (e.g. accounting and controlling, investment and financial management, personnel management and organization, production management and logistics, business informatics) with research references in service and media management. The applicant should also have a proven track record of prestigious published research articles, regularly participate in relevant (inter)national symposia and conferences, and be involved in international research networks. Ideally, the candidate should already have a record of publications and presentations as a single author, as well as experience in applying for and acquiring third-party funding.
The junior professorship is responsible for excellence in the field of »Service Management and Media« in both research and teaching. The future holder of the position should design and implement an independent research and teaching profile at the interface of business administration, service and media management. In terms of methodology, she or he should be familiar with a range of established empirical social research methods, as well as ideally possessing in-depth experience of innovative approaches to the generation and analysis of data (e.g. data science, artificial intelligence).
The teaching responsibilities of the junior professorship are carried out in accordance with those of the Department of Media Management and should take place as part of all the study programs to which the Department of Media Management contributes, in particular the Master's degree program in Media Management. Teaching also includes courses on business administration and media economics in the Bachelor's degree program in Media Culture. The successful applicant should ideally have relevant experience and be able to demonstrate outstanding skill in teaching courses with business content, for example through teaching evaluations and didactic training. A willingness and ability to teach courses in German and English, as well as digitally-supported courses, is also required.
At the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, we offer good research and teaching conditions as well as the opportunity to work in a faculty in which »media« is examined as a subject of inquiry from the perspective of various disciplines and in which there are many points of contact for cooperation.
The successful applicant should actively participate in the further development of the Department of Media Management and work closely with the existing professorships in media management, as well as the other professorships in the Departments of Media Studies and Media Informatics at the Faculty of Media. A willingness to engage in cross-faculty research and interdisciplinary teaching, including collaboration with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, is also desirable. Participation in academic self-administration is also expected.
In the future, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar plans to intensify its cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt (Franz Liszt College of Music) and the other Thuringian universities. It is therefore expected that the junior professorship will also be involved in this intensification of cooperation in both research and teaching.
The general employment requirements pertain to § 89 of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG). If these requirements are met, the employee will initially be hired temporarily as a civil servant (‘Beamte’). The employment contract is limited to three years, with an extension for a further three years following a positive evaluation. The teaching load in the first phase of the junior professorship is 4 LVS (courses).
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar places great importance on diversity and equal opportunities. We are committed to maintaining a family-friendly and non-discriminatory working environment and to pursuing a human resources policy which promotes gender equality and diversity. For this reason, we encourage applications from people from a wide variety of backgrounds and with diverse ranges of experience and biographies. The university’s strategic goals include increasing the proportion of women in teaching and research, and we therefore expressly welcome applications from qualified female academics. Equally qualified people with disabilities will be given preferential consideration.
The university expects applicants to be willing to relocate to Weimar or the immediate vicinity. The university will gladly support you in relocating your place of residence.
