Students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar succeeded at the ADC Talent Award 2026

Three students from the Faculty of Art and Design won the coveted ADC Nails at the ADC Talent Award 2026: Nina Buschendorf received a Silver Nail for her »Sexismus gibt es erst seit 23 Stunden« project, Xiaoyi Jin was also awarded a Silver Nail for her »TRIADISCHER GIN« project, and Mai Do was awarded a Bronze Nail for her »VOXAIPE – Decoded« project. Eight additional works received a total of nine awards.

Silver Nail for »Sexismus gibt es erst seit 23 Stunden« by Nina Buschendorf

Nina Buschendorf sits beneath a metal structure from which a long, colourfully printed fabric strip hangs in multiple loops. She touches one of the strips with her hand.

Nina Buschendorf brings an abstract historical dimension to life in »Sexismus gibt es erst seit 23 Stunden«. To do this, she chose to use a shift in scale that is as simple as it is clever: She condensed two million years of human history into a single calendar year. Her work reveals just how recent systematic injustice and everyday violence are in the history of our species. These aspects only appear on the last day of this imaginary year. Buschendorf’s Master’s thesis translates this insight into an infographic journey through time. A 55-metre-long printed strip of fabric runs through a mechanically operated installation. Day by day, the crank turns and a different image of humanity and gender relations unfolds. The final day is represented in a leporello that includes the developments that have transformed the way we have been living together for the past 5,000 years or so.

Silver Nail for »TRIADISCHER GIN« by Xiaoyi Jin

The secret of Xiaoyi Jin’s »TRIADISCHER GIN« lies in the label. A double-layer lenticular system transforms the bottle into a small stage. When turned, the silhouettes and grid lines come to life. This creates animated figures, alluding to Oskar Schlemmer’s »Triadic Ballet«. Jin’s semester project translates Weimar’s Bauhaus heritage not as a historical reference, but as a choreographic principle into a modern packaging design. Xiaoyi Jin has combined a sense of regional connection and high-quality craftsmanship with an interactive design for the Wiegand Manufactur Weimar. She makes rhythm, movement, and reflection immediately tangible.

Bronze Nail for »VOXAIPE – Decoded« by Mai Do

Exhibition view with two vertical monitors in front of a light curtain. The left monitor shows a black user interface, while the right displays a voice-generated alphabet with handwritten-looking letterforms.

In »VOXAIPE – Decoded«, Mai Do makes visible what would otherwise remain fleeting: the form of a voice. The semester project uses an AI-supported system. It analyses vocal characteristics such as timbre, rhythm, pitch, and volume. It then uses them to generate variable letter forms. In this way, speech becomes design, and typography becomes a graphic record of voice. The work explores how artificial intelligence understands human expression and translates it into a tangible form. A 228-page artist’s book that documents the typographic progression of a monologue lasting several minutes complements the installation.

»ACHTUNG summaery2025« by Mona Kerntke and Leonard Behre

Street banner

The motto for summaery2025 was »Achtung« and focussed on student projects. »Achtung« was not intended as a warning, but rather as an invitation to look more closely. To achieve this, Kerntke and Behre’s work drew on elements encountered in road traffic, where awareness is immediately visible in the everyday — things like road markings, signs, and reflective materials. Inspired by perspectively distorted road markings, the idea of stretching became the central design motif. The deliberate distortion draws visitors’ attention and guides their gaze. Neon pink and silver had Weimar glowing during summaery2025.

»ARTGERECHT« by Anna Buhler

Product view of »ARTGERECHT« by Anna Buhler: a game board, playing cards, game pieces, a die, game boxes and an information sheet are arranged on a pink background.

»ARTGERECHT« explores speciesism, a form of discrimination that is deeply ingrained in everyday life but rarely acknowledged. Instead of relying on confrontation or shocking imagery, the project offers a playful way to reflect on how humans treat animals. The board game encourages players to engage in conversation and, through constant changes of role and perspective, enables them to understand the realities of life for different animals in our society. The popularity, value, and function of the species drawn at random determine whether players move forward or backward in the game. »ARTGERECHT« gives both adults and children an accessible introduction to a complex topic.

»DROWNING IS SILENT« by Alexander Knauer

Film still from »DROWNING IS SILENT« by Alexander Knauer: in a dark, foggy scene, a boy faces a veiled figure. A rescue boat lies in the background.

»DROWNING IS SILENT« is an audiovisual fundraising project for civilian sea rescue. The campaign centres around a music video for the song of the same name by Berlin-based musician Xaver Scheuer. The song and video focus on the plight of refugees in the Mediterranean and highlights political failure in dealing with the refugee crisis. The film intertwines the stories of a boy fleeing his home and a young sea rescuer. When the two meet on the open sea, they are left disappointed by social and political institutions. The film was released as part of a fundraising campaign for a new rescue vessel in collaboration with the NGOs LeaveNoOneBehind and SOS Humanity.

»Ein Messestand für Leipzig«

Exhibition view of »Ein Messestand für Leipzig«: a trade fair stand for the Faculty of Art and Design is designed as a fictional underground station entrance. Above the black structure, a sign reads »Leipzig → Weimar«, while publications and textiles are displayed on the steps.

By Emelie Brockhaus, Bruno Domingos, Johannes Fest, Ames Grund, Pauline Kuritz, Bennet Mielke, Christina Reinfant, Sina Robering, Denise Sawade, and Hauke Scholz

The team developed an exhibition stand representing the Faculty of Art and Design and showcasing the University’s creative work for the Leipzig Book Fair. The project is designed to look like an underground station symbolic of a quick hop to Weimar. The design was inspired by Martin Kippenberger’s »Metro-Net« project from the 1990s. The exhibition stand combines spatial staging, reference, and an invitation to an imaginary journey to Weimar and the university campus.

»RED AF* – Red Asian Flush« by Soo Ah Youn and Anastasia Fast

Product view of »RED AF* – Red Asian Flush« by Soo Ah Youn and Anastasia Fast: two closed, thread-bound books lie on a red background. The light-coloured covers show the titles »RED ASIAN FLUSH« and »RED AF*«.

»RED AF* – Red Asian Flush« is an analogue and digital storytelling project about the phenomenon of the »Asian Flush«, a genetic reaction to alcohol that is often downplayed, even though it may be associated with health risks. The project counters clichés with narrative education: The protagonist learns, through an illustrated book, to see her flushing not as a weakness, but as a warning from her body. The character »Blush« personifies the phenomenon and presents medical, cultural and social aspects in a humorous way. The book is supplemented by a website that provides scientific information and offers a space for discussion in an interactive community section. »SET MAGAZINE« by Jülide Alemdar, Laura Hörning, and Lilli Sörries

Two overlapping magazine pages against a black background. The left page contains dense text, while the right page shows small black-and-white images arranged along the edge.

The self-published »SET« magazine explores the complexity of beauty with its end, its persistence, and its transformation. Together with female artists and designers, the first issue offers new perspectives on a topic that is often treated superficially. The magazine creates space for emotional and in-depth exploration, understanding beauty as a shifting, multi-layered, individual phenomenon.

»To Mark is to Mean« by Emelie Gannert

Two copies of a publication lie on a blue surface. The brown-printed covers show various typographic markings and the title »To Mark is to Mean«.

»To Mark is to Mean« explores how emphasising typography both draws attention to the meaning in texts and actively contributes to it. The Master’s thesis combines historical examples with contemporary works by 35 international designers, type foundries, and studios, including those working outside the Latin script system. The result is an archive that illustrates the breadth of typographic emphasis and explores its largely unexplored design potential.

»Von einem freien Pups« by Clara Irmer

A closed, hand-bound picture book lies on a light background. The cover shows a colourful illustration with handwritten text.

»Von einem freien Pups« tells the story of a little fart who suffers from a terrible fear of enclosed spaces. After his stay in the gut, he is not met – as was originally expected – by sniffing noses and the limitless outside world. Instead, Püpschen finds himself in a tight spot once again. In his darkest hour, however, he realises: Maybe freedom begins in the mind sometimes. This semester project combines illustration, humour, and a surprisingly poetic perspective on confinement, escape, and self-liberation.
