Am 1. November 2024 hat Dr. Carsten Praum die neu geschaffene Stelle des Wohnungsbaukoordinators der Stadt Leipzig übernommen. Der Soziologe und Urbanist war von April 2016 bis Oktober 2024 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Professur Stadtplanung der Fakultät Architektur und Urbanistik.

Natural hazards and severe weather events put buildings under great stress. Junior Professor Anastasia Athanasiou is investigating how to plan and build tall, slender structures safely and in a resource-efficient manner. Since July 2023, she has held the newly established chair of Natural Hazards and Structural Resilience at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. A native of Greece, she previously worked at the University of Catania (Italy) and Concordia University in Montreal (Canada). In her inaugural lecture, she will report on the challenges of the past year and provide an insight into current research achievements.

From October 2022 until September 2024, PD Dr Sandra Huning served as Deputy Professor of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. In October 2024, she will return to the Technical University of Dortmund to resume her position at the Faculty of Spatial Planning within the Department of Urban and Regional Sociology. In 2012, Prof. Dr. Barbara Schönig was appointed head of the Department of Urban Planning. She held this position until 2021, when she was appointed State Secretary for the Thüringer Ministerium für Infrastruktur und Landwirtschaft, a position she held for over two years. In July 2024, she will be returning to the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism and preparing to teach in the 2024/2025 winter semester.

How will artificial intelligence change our society? Do algorithms influence our politics? Can digital technologies make trusting more difficult? These are questions being investigated by Junior Professor Dr. Maurice Jakesch, newly appointed computer science professor in the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His professorship for Computational Social Science uses computer systems to gain insights into social issues. Jakesch and his team analyse large volumes of data utilising machine learning methods, conduct online experiments and test AI prototypes of their own design. Their aim is to attain a better understanding of the opportunities and risks presented by algorithms and AI systems. In the following interview, Maurice Jakesch answers the most important questions about the newly created professorship and the Computational Social Science field of research.

Markus Weisbeck, Professor of Graphic Design in the Visual Communication degree programme, has designed the visual identity of the Canadian Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia. The graphic concept visualises parts of a work by the artist Kapwani Kiwanga.

Dr. Luise Nerlich, kommissarische Leiterin der Professur Bauformenlehre an der Fakultät Architektur und Urbanistik der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, vertritt Deutschland in der Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA). Für die Legislaturperiode 2023 bis 2026 wurde sie neben Dr. Tillman Prinz, Geschäftsführer der Bundesarchitektenkammer, für die Arbeitsgruppe »Architecture and Children« nominiert und übernimmt damit als festes Mitglied das Amt von Dr. Hannes Hubrich, der die Arbeitsgruppe viele Jahre als Gast begleitet hat.

Prof. Dr. Eva Hornecker, Professor of Human-Computer Interaction in the Computer Science of Media Department at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, has been named a »Distinguished Member« of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). She was recognised on 17 January 2024 for her significant contributions to the field of tangible, embedded and embodied interactions (TEI). This title recognises Prof. Hornecker’s commitment to the development of the ACM TEI Conference and the wider community.

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Christopher Buschow wechselt zum 1. Januar 2024 als Universitätsprofessor für Digitalen Journalismus an die Hamburg Media School (HMS) und TU Hamburg.

Tim Simon-Meyer, Junior Professor for Constructive Design and Experimentation, has been a member of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism since 1 October 2023. He is one of eight tenure track professors at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, which the University was able to secure through the »Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses« programme.

On Tuesday 26 September 2023, the Inauguration Ceremony for Prof. Peter Benz as President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar was held in the Audimax. In front of a full auditorium, Thuringia’s Minister of Science Wolfgang Tiefensee officially appointed the new President. Numerous University members and guests attended Prof. Benz’s inaugural speech on »Being Free«.
