150 years of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
On Friday, 1 October 2010, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will present a diverse programme of events to commemorate its founding 150 years ago.
The Grand Ducal Saxon Art School was founded in Weimar on 1 October 1860. »That day marked the beginning of an eventful, and at times magnificent, 150-year history of the university in Weimar,« said the vice-chancellor of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Prof. Gerd Zimmermann, explaining the importance of the occasion. »It was the first step toward what is now the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, which is rooted in this tradition.«
The festivities on 1 October 2010 will begin at 11 am with a ceremony in the Weimarhalle, to which friends, partners, employees and students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar have been invited. Thuringia’s Minister-President Christine Lieberknecht will pay tribute to the commemorative anniversary in a speech. The keynote address will be given by Prof. Christoph Stölzl, president of the College of Music FRANZ LISZT.
From 1 pm to 5 pm, guests and visitors are invited to learn about the illustrious history of the university. Visitors can acquaint themselves with the history, research and creativity of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar at various locations throughout the city. This exhibition format will create a tangible map that illustrates the past and present relationships between the university and the city of Weimar. Theme-based guided tours will begin at 1:30 pm (starting at the Weimarhalle, Unesco-Platz 1) and 3:30 pm (starting at the Bauhaus.Atelier, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 6b).
A major commemorative exhibition titled »In Celebration of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, 1860 – 2010« will open on 1 October at 5:30 pm at the main building of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße. 8. The exhibits, which include detailed descriptions and numerous unpublished photos, reconstruct the history of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in a very tangible way.
Visitors to the exhibition can take history home with them in the form of a two-volume commemorative publication titled »Wir sind! Wir wollen! Und wir schaffen!: Von der Großherzoglichen Kunstschule zur Bauhaus-Universität Weimar« (We Are! We Want! And We Create! From the Grand Ducal Art School to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar). Each volume contains articles illuminating the important chapters in the 150-year history of the university. The first volume, which examines the historic developments from 1860 to 1945, will be publicly presented at a ceremony in the foyer of the main building (Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8) on 30 September at 3 pm.
In the evening, friends, employees and students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are invited to attend a big birthday bash on campus. The party will begin with funk soul music at the Screenhaus.SOLAR on the campus grounds. Later in the evening, the DJ team Marbert Rocel will perform in the main building. The party will come to a close with a diverse mix of synthesized and live music.
