Climate-Friendly Travel

Ein essentieller Bestandteil von Wissenschaft ist der Austausch mit anderen Forschenden und die gemeinsame Diskussion von Forschungsergebnissen. Durch Globalisierung und Digitalisierung kann sich auch die Wissenschaft international vernetzen. Wissenschaftliche Perspektiven aus der ganzen Welt fördern Diversität, Interdisziplinarität und soziale Gerechtigkeit innerhalb des Wissenschaftsapparats. Die Internationalisierung hat zur Folge, dass für internationale Konferenzen, Gremien, Kommissionen, etc. immer mehr Dienstreisen nötig sind. In vielen Bereichen wie Feld- und Archivforschung, die persönliche Präsentation von Forschungsergebnissen oder zur Anbahnung von Kooperationen, kann auf Dienst- und Flugreisen definitiv nicht verzichtet werden (Gerhards et al. 2022, 9).

Die Corona-Pandemie hat andererseits ebenfalls gezeigt, dass die Gesellschaft in der Lage ist, neue Kommunikationsformen und -tools zu entwickeln, um auch einen virtuellen Austausch zu ermöglichen (ibid., 13). Es kann nicht gänzlich auf Flugreisen verzichtet werden, dennoch ist es wichtig, Maßnahmen aufzustellen, »die einen Wandel hin zu einer nachhaltigen akademischen Reisekultur einleiten und die Internationalität von Wissenschaft sogar befördern« (ibid.). Anhand des Prinzips »vermeiden, verringern, kompensieren« (ibid., 25) sollen Dienstreisen und Alternativen genau evaluiert werden, bevor die Entscheidung für eine Flugreise gefällt wird.
