At the Bauhaus University Weimar, preparations for the annual show "summaery2022" are in full swing. Here in the wood workshop of the Faculty of Art and Design, students are producing self-designed furniture for a new design of the foyer of the Mensa Am Park in Weimar. Starting Thursday, everything will be presented. Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Photo: Thomas Müller

The »summaery2022« annual show at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar asks the question of »Who knows?«, but also provides some answers.

No one on campus, in the lecture halls or in the workrooms really has time to reflect at the moment. Shortly before the end of the semester, all students and teachers are fully focused on finishing off their projects, modules and seminars as best possible, be it with a presentation, exam or exhibition. A lot of knowledge has been produced, developed further and conveyed over the course of the academic year. This is taken up in the »summaery2022« being held at the University from 14 to 17 July, which considers the question of »Wer weiß? | Who knows?«.

For who knows anything for sure? Even at a university, a great many things are uncertain and unpredictable in such times of upheaval; knowledge that has been passed on must be reconsidered and reviewed. Hence the question is intentionally ambiguous. Is a university today still a privileged place for knowledge production at all? And where does knowledge actually come from?

The summaery2022 attempts to provide answers to just these questions and invites visitors to make up their own minds. All students can undoubtedly agree that a tour of the university is well worthwhile: visibly motivated, they busily work for days on end to prepare their campus, vividly portray the results of their studies and present these in authentic locations. Around 150 projects are being showcased this year. In addition to the exhibitions, the summaery programme is once again packed with a whole host of highlights and invites visitors to enjoy music and drinks, and to engage in personal encounters and discussions – precisely the “university spirit” that we’ve all had to do without in the past two years in fact. It is eagerly anticipated all the more now!

Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, the Interim President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, will open the summaery at 4 pm on Thursday, 14 July together with the deans of the university’s four faculties during an official welcome address outside the Main Building. Afterwards, various DJanes will play their summer night sets from 6 pm and invite you to party until midnight between the Main Building, Van de Velde Building and M18 student union. The adjacent product design courtyard will serve as a chill-out zone and also remain open until midnight, after which the after-show party will continue at »Mascha« nightclub.

Friday, 15 July is the day devoted to engineers and computer scientists. Visitors are invited to come explore scientific projects and laboratories during two key events. Between 12:30 pm and 6 pm, the SCIENCE MILE Q3 open day will take place at the Faculty of Civil Engineering on Coudraystraße. Are houses made of straw sustainable? And what exactly does plaster have to do with the phasing out of fossil fuels? And how do pathogens get into our wastewater? These highly topical questions are answered in fascinating experiments, laboratory tours, 3D models and computer simulations. Particularly families are warmly invited to get involved in the countless hands-on projects. More information: www.uni-weimar.de/q3

The Faculty of Media is using the summaery2022 to inaugurate its new location in the former lemonade factory at Schwanseestraße 143 and to offer insights into its new premises that the departments of computer science and media studies as well as the Dean’s Office will call home for the next three years. There will be several exhibitions to visit, computer science labs to explore, the latest hardware and software to try out and performances to experience live. The Open Lab Night taking place at 5–10 pm on Friday will count among the highlights. A total of six newly established labs will open their doors and showcase more than 20 topical cutting-edge projects, among others from the fields of human-computer interaction, software engineering and media security. Staff and students invite visitors to test virtual projections with Oculus Quest 2, for example, and to discuss these with the developers. Visitors will be able to test video games developed by students in the Bauhaus Gamesfabrik. www.uni-weimar.de/oln

The award ceremony for the Lyonel Art Prize of the Faculty of Art and Design at 6 pm on Friday constitutes another key summaery moment. Outstanding artistic final projects will be showcased in the group exhibition at Berkaer Straße 11, with one awarded prize money totalling €2,000. A big alumni meet will take place at the Bauhaus.Atelier from 5 pm on Saturday, 16 July. This get-together has become a well-attended fixture of the summaery in recent years, bringing together all graduates who still feel a close connection with their university. This year, the band iUll will perform. With their distinctive 80s sound, they’ve been an insiders’ tip in Weimar’s nightlife scene for some time now. Film enthusiasts are in for a treat later in the evening: from 9:30 pm, film art created by students will be screened at the Summer Reel cinema outside the University Library. After two years of pandemic, this location was a conscious choice – outside yet at the heart of the town. Countless other vernissages, performances, discussion rounds, and even a table tennis workshop are being held in addition to the key summaery2022 events. See here for an overview:

Visitors to the summaery2022 can best explore the 150 projects that will be exhibited and presented at 52 locations around the town of Weimar and the university under their own steam. An overview map is available at central locations such as the Main Building. Those who’d prefer a guided tour can join one of the tours; the start times and locations will be published online: www.uni-weimar.de/en/university/news/annual-events/annual-events-2022/summaery/tours

This year, Visual Communication graduate Lena Haubner has taken the summaery design as her motif. Using abstract characters that only become a whole at second glance, she has created a fitting look for the intentionally ambiguous motto.
