Degree programmes

PhD programme

Study Programme Aims
The aim of this doctoral programme is an advanced qualification for artists and designers who have already graduated from a master or diploma degree programme at an art or design college or university. Each doctoral student develops an innovative dissertation topic at the interface of art, design and science within the structured degree programme. The three-year study programme is completed with a PhD thesis, which consists of a theoretical and a practical component. The qualification is awarded at the end of three years after the fulfilment of required coursework, the completion of a dissertation, a body of artistic work, as well as an oral examination (disputation). The Faculty of Art and Design thus offers a double qualification that is valuable in teaching and research positions as well as in leadership positions in cultural institutions, the organization of cultural events.

Mentor System
Each student is personally supervised by at least two professors throughout the entire programme of study. One mentor supervises the scientific, theoretical component, while the other provides guidance for the artistic development of the project. One of the two mentors must come from the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The second mentor can come from another faculty or college. In specific, especially interdisciplinary cases, where external expertise is required, a 3rd mentor can be invited.

The three-year study programme (curriculum) primarily serves as a supportive framework for the doctoral candidates during the development of their research projects. It is bundled into two week-long intensive sessions in each semester, one at the beginning and one at the end. The “PhD week” consists of graduate seminars, graduate colloquia and other key qualifications important for career building and networking. Seminars, conferences, workshops and exhibitions, as well as an evening program are also organized within the scope of the PhD programme.
Further information on programme requirements can be found in the study and examination regulations: Studien- und Prüfungsordnungen

Individual PhD »Dr.phil.«

As alternative to the practice-based PhD programme, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar awards the academic degree of "Doctor philosophae" (Dr. phil.) through the Faculty of Art and Design. The doctorate proves a special scientific qualification resulting in a dissertation as scientifically significant written work as well as an oral examination (disputation).
