Wood Workshop

Timber is one of the most important materials in art and design. In the wood workshop of the Faculty of Art and Design, it is processed, researched and further developed. The workshop is a workspace, a place of learning and a production facility all in one. Here, models, prototypes and artistic works are created that make ideas tangible and processes visible.

The work in the wood workshop combines precision craftsmanship with openness to experimental approaches and new processes.

Working between craftsmanship and technology

The wood workshop is designed for working with solid wood and panel materials. Eleven workbenches are available for practical work.

The machinery includes:

  • Circular saw
  • Band saw
  • Planing machines
  • Jointer
  • Table router
  • Router
  • Various sanding machines

Digital tools from the fields of CAD, CAM, CNC and model making complement the classic equipment. These include:

  • A CNC milling machine with a working size of up to 2 metres x 1 metre x 1 metre
  • A mobile 3D scanner
  • A 3D printer

This allows analogue and digital manufacturing processes to be seamlessly combined.

Technical support and exchange

Workshop manager and master carpenter Andreas Riese provides expert support for the work in the wood workshop. He advises on the planning and implementation of projects, provides training in the use of machines and helps with technical questions. The workshop also sees itself as a place for exchange and knowledge transfer.
