Metal

Blick in die Werkstatt mit Maschinen

Metal Workshop

Metal shapes numerous artistic and creative works thanks to its malleability and technical versatility. In the metal workshop of the Faculty of Art and Design, metals are processed, shaped and joined on various scales. The workshop offers space for precise craftsmanship, technical processes and experimental applications.

The 420-square-metre workshop is equipped with a corridor-controlled crane system. Workstations for students are integrated directly into the machine area, enabling close integration of planning, processing and implementation.

The Metal Workshop cooperates closely with the workshops for Wood, Synthetic Materials, CAD/CAM/CNC, Model Making, and Plaster and Mould Construction. Student projects are often developed across workshops and benefit from shared technical knowledge and coordinated supervision.

Equipment and processing options

The workshop offers numerous machines and devices for processing sheet metal, pipes, profiles and semi-finished products. After intensive training, students can use many of the machines independently. The workshop staff takes care of changing and converting the tools.

The machines available for use by students include:

  • Hydraulic guillotine shears
  • Swivel bending machines
  • Roll bending machines, manual and electric
  • Semi-automatic mandrel bending machine
  • Hydraulic pipe bender
  • Various metal band saws
  • Bending machines for flat and shaped steel
  • Bench and pillar drills
  • Radial drilling machine with three work tables and 360-degree swivel range
  • Various belt and hand grinders
  • HPM 500 hydraulic sheet metal punch
  • Plasma and flame cutters
  • Gas-powered forge

Certain machines are operated exclusively by workshop personnel, including:

  • Milling and turning machines
  • MAG, MIG and TIG welding equipment
  • Welding and cutting torches for acetylene and oxygen

This clear division ensures safe working processes and supports the professional implementation of complex projects.

Welding, mechanics and surface treatment

A dedicated welding area enables the joining of structural steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and other alloys. Rotationally symmetrical and mechanical components are produced in the mechanical department. A separate grinding room is used for surface treatment and finishing. The workshop offers eight workstations at workbenches as well as additional niches for individual design and construction.

Technical support

Two specialists supervise the work in the metal workshop: Jens Höland, head of the workshop and Bachelor Professional of Metal Production and Management, and Patrick Joppien-Stern, Industrial Mechanic for Operating Technology. They support students in planning and implementing their projects, advise on manufacturing processes and ensure the safe and proper use of machines and materials.
