SpaceKidHeadCup 2022 - Soapbox building workshop and soapbox race
The best soapbox race on the planet Weimar is entering its 31st round. Traditionally held on 1 May, the event is once again allowed to let the boxes take to the starting line after a two-year pit stop. As in the last race in 2019, the brave racers will jet down Windmühlenstraße. As always, the much-coveted trophies in the "Style" and "Speed" categories await the participants.
Registration of the boxes begins on Sunday, 1 May, 10 a.m. The TÜV team will check whether the vehicles are roadworthy shortly before the final start at 1 pm. Safety instructions can be found on the SpaceKidHeadCup website at https://skhc.de/.
Party: Advance booking of tickets & daily test
From 9 p.m. onwards, there will again be a jubilee party in the old Funkhaus to celebrate the pilots in a fitting manner. Tickets for this can be purchased at Kontor Stift in the M18 for 7.50 Euros. A daily negative corna test will be required, but the organising team will offer an opportunity for official testing on location at the race.
Soapbox Building Workshop on Saturday, 23 April, and Sunday, 24 April, from 11 a.m. each day
The race has always been organised by students on a voluntary basis and can only be held thanks to the many great volunteers. This year too, on the weekend before the race, there will be a soapbox-building workshop in the backyard of the Van-de-Velde Building (Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse 7), run by students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Here, wild-eyed pilots with less experience can find helping hands, thinking heads and suitable materials (recycled, of course).

But the SpaceKidHeadCup is not only supported by the students; the mayor of Weimar has also pledged his support in advance: "In the meantime, the soapbox race has become an integral part of Weimar's cultural scene," says Peter Kleine.
Why the »SpaceKidHeadCup« is called what it is called
Incidentally, the original name of the race, »SpaceKidHeadCup«, is derived from the first Weimar soapbox race that took place as a tribute to Juri Gagarin's flight into space. Even if the pilots of the soapbox race don't have the path to space ahead of them, they are still reaching for the stars. This makes for impressive machines every year, many of which have little to do with the classic »soapbox«. We are looking forward to this year's boxes!

Jubelfeier: Tickets im Vorverkauf & tagesaktueller Test
Ab 21 Uhr wird es im alten Funkhaus wieder eine Jubelfeier geben, um die Pilotinnen und Piloten gebührend zu feiern. Tickets dafür können im Kontor Stift in der M18 für 7,50 Euro erworben werden. Ein tagesaktueller, negativer Corona-Test wird notwendig sein. Das Organisationsteam bietet schon vor Ort beim Rennen eine Möglichkeit zur offiziellen Testung an.
Seifenkisten-Bau-Workshop am Samstag, 23. April, und Sonntag, 24. April, jeweils ab 11 Uhr
Schon immer wird das Rennen von Studierenden ehrenamtlich organisiert und kann nur durch die vielen, großartigen, freiwilligen Helferinnen und Helfer ausgetragen werden. So gibt es auch in diesem Jahr am Wochenende vor dem Rennen einen Seifenkisten-Bau-Workshop im Hinterhof des Van-de-Velde Baus (Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 7), der von Studierenden der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar durchgeführt wird. Hier können wild entschlossene Pilotinnen und Piloten mit weniger Erfahrung helfende Hände, denkende Köpfe und passende Materialien (natürlich recycled) finden.
Freiwillige Helferinnen und Helfer gesucht
Wer seine eigene helfende Hand beim Auf- und Abbau der Party oder dem Seifenkistenrennen verleihen kann, meldet sich gern per E-Mail an skhc[at]kulturtragwerk.de beim Organisationsteam. Aber nicht nur unter den Studierenden findet der SpaceKidHeadCup Unterstützung, auch der Weimarer Oberbürgermeister sagte im Voraus seine Unterstützung zu: »Mittlerweile ist das Seifenkistenrennen ja ein fester Bestandteil der Weimarer Kulturszene geworden«, so Peter Kleine.
Warum der »SpaceKidHeadCup« so heißt, wie er heißt
Der Originalname des Rennens »SpaceKidHeadCup« leitet sich übrigens vom ersten Weimarer Seifenkistenrennen ab, dass als Hommage an Juri Gagarins Flug in den Weltraum stattfand. Auch wenn die Pilotinnen und Piloten des Seifenkistenrennens nicht den Weg bis ins All vor sich haben, greifen sie trotzdem nach den Sternen. Das sorgt in jedem Jahr für eindrucksvolle Gerätschaften, die oft mit der klassischen »Seifenkiste« nicht mehr viel zu tun haben. Wir sind gespannt auf die diesjährigen Kisten!
