Leo Stolte has been awarded with a recognition at the prestigious Mia Seeger Prize for his semester project »Vertical Games«. The future product designer was inspired by the omnipresent Plexiglas panes that are designed to protect against aerosols.
Vertical Games is a game concept designed for public spaces. The design was influenced by the current measures against the spread of viruses. The now omnipresent aerosol protection served as a source of inspiration. Under the guiding principle of »closeness at a distance«, the idea of a vertical game board was generated, whereby the social benefit of the product is paramount. The concept is scalable and can be combined with most board games.
The aim of the design is to promote social interaction in public spaces and create added value despite current isolation and contact restrictions. Installing the product in hospitals, nursing homes or casual locations such as train stations or bus stops allows the people playing the game to experience »closeness at a distance«.
Jury Statement:
»In Lockdown in general, and specifically the omnipresent discs serving as aerosol protection, the idea of the game ignited. Obviously, the game mitigates isolation and helps to endure separation. The touch of poetry is felt by anyone who breathed against cold window panes as a child.«
