New Faculty Management at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

All four faculties at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar have elected new faculty management. The new deans have been appointed by the President and will serve a three-year term at the university until the beginning of the 2025 winter semester.

Prof. Andreas Mühlenberend (Industrial Design) was elected Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design on Wednesday, 12 October 2022. In addition to working as a freelance designer (primarily in the medical technology field), Andreas Mühlenberend began his teaching career at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano from 2002 until 2009. Following that, he taught at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and then at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar starting in 2015. His faculty leadership team is rounded out with Vice Dean of Strategic Development Prof. Dr. Andrea Dreyer (Art and its Didactics), Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Björn Dahlem (Skulptur, Objekt, Installation), and Vice Dean of Research Prof. Dr. Jan Willmann (Theory and History of Design).

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Tom Lahmer is the new Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering

The Faculty of Civil Engineering Faculty Board reconstituted itself on 5 October and unanimously elected Prof. Dr.rer. Nat. Tom Lahmer as the new dean. With a PhD in mathematics, Lahmer was appointed Junior Professor of Stochastics and Optimisation at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in 2013. Six years later, his W3 professorship position in the same subjects was made permanent. He is supported in his new position by Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Kraus (Steel and Hybrid Construction) and Vice Dean of Research Prof. Dr.-Ing. Conrad Völker (Building Physics). Together with instructors and students, the new Dean’s Office hopes to establish an innovative, student and environmentally-friendly, diverse Faculty of Civil Engineering.

On Wednesday, 12 October 2022, the newly constituted Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism Faculty Board unanimously elected Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sigrun Langner as dean. Holding a PhD in Architecture, the landscape architect was initially a junior professor in the Faculty starting in 2019. She has been a Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning since 2019. She will now lead the Faculty together with Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Jörg Springer (Design and Complex Theory of Buildings) and Vice Dean of Research Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Jasper Cepl (Theory and History of Modern Architecture). In addition to providing quality degree programmes, the new Dean’s Office hopes to promote networking within the university, especially when it comes to research.

Prof. Dr. Lorenz Engell is the new Dean of the Faculty of Media

The Faculty of Media Faculty Board unanimously elected Prof. Dr. Lorenz Engell as dean on 12 October 2022. The Media Philosophy professor has taught at what is now the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar since 1993 and was the co-founding dean of the Faculty of Media in 1996. Between 2008 and 2020, he was the co-director of the International Research Institute for Cultural Technologies and Media Philosophy with Bernhard Siegert. He will be supported in his new position as dean by Vice Dean of Research and Interfaculty Cooperation Prof. Dr. Eva Hornecker (Human-Computer Interaction) and Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Simon Frisch (Dozentur Film- und Medienwissenschaft).
