»energy rising« – Fifth Episode of »POWER HOUSE« Anniversary Exhibition Kicks Off at nova space

On Friday 29 September 2023 from 6 to 10 p.m., the fifth episode of the »POWER HOUSE« exhibition series will open in Weimar’s Schiller-Museum. The series marks the 100th anniversary of the first Bauhaus exhibition. nova space, the University Gallery of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, is hosting the exhibition under the title »energy rising« in reference to the many forms of energy flow.

The final episode of the exhibition series examines the motif of the »POWER HOUSE«, which was established at the beginning of the series as a power station or generator of (creative) energies, ideas and processes.  How can generated energy be stored and used? Where do we get (everyday) strength from? How can we physically and spiritually »empower«, network, unload or disconnect ourselves so that we maintain a sustainable state?

These questions and others form the foundation of this exhibition, which deals with physical and imagined energy flows. This includes looking at explosive and implosive states and their psychological and physical effects, as well as engineering and architectural questions on climate neutrality. The exhibition curators juxtapose works by 19 different artists using various artistic mediums. The works represent, embody, or materialize all facets of energy and illustrate its poetic as well as its scientific and critical potential.

In addition to artworks by Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students as well internationally renowned positions, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism will also be represented with projects that examine energy use and resource conservation issues. The topping out ceremony of the »Bauhaus Energy Hub«, a novel, energy self-sufficient experimental building on the Coudraystraße campus, is part of the exhibition programme. Another project »360° Bildung« includes two virtual tours: A visit to the Umpferstedt composting plant as well as the university’s potential for achieving climate neutrality on campus.

About »POWER HOUSE«:
»POWER HOUSE« is a series of five exhibitions held at nova space, the University Gallery. The exhibitions, which began in April 2023, examine aspects of living in reference to the Klassik Stiftung’s thematic year. Previous episodes looked at the questions of how we want to live, grow and evolve (»where do we grow from here«); experiences of belonging and identity (»no one belongs here more than you«); life in transition and constant change (»can’t stop, won’t stop«); and an optimistic view of the future (»reframing the future«).
The fifth and final episode, titled »energy rising«, brings the power in »POWER HOUSE« to centre stage and is dedicated to energy as a concept that fluctuates between destructive and creative, transformative and conserving.

For the 100th anniversary of the first Bauhaus exhibition, nova space (the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Gallery), is occupying the exhibition spaces in the Schiller-Museum Weimar. The Klassik Stiftung Weimar has dedicated its annual programme to the theme of living, with the State Bauhaus as the focal point. The Klassik Stiftung Weimar examines the future of housing and living together, inviting its visitors to engage with sustainable building practices and to discuss topics like displacement and gentrification as they relate to historical forms of housing.
