(from first enrollment in winter semester 2025/26 onwards)

The opportunity to spend a semester abroad at one of the worldwide almost 100 partner universities of our faculty is open to all students starting their studies for a bachelor’s degree in architecture from winter semester 2025/26 onwards.

The semester abroad is completed in the 5th semester. Information events and advice on this are offered by the faculty and the International Office at an early stage. The application procedure for desired exchange places is carried out in the 3rd semester so that there is sufficient time to prepare for the stay abroad (e.g. improving personal language skills).

Study achievements from the semester abroad can be credited towards the degree, recognition is based on a Learning Agreement made prior to the semester aboard. A necessary component of the courses attended at the partner university is an architectural or urban design project totalling 12 credit points (CP; credits according to ECTS).

In addition, students can freely choose courses at the exchange university which can be credited to their degree programme in Weimar if they match the subject areas of the compulsory elective modules (12 CP) and the elective modules (6 CP). Language courses, for example, count as creditable elective modules.

If less than 30 credit points are earned during the semester abroad, the difference must be made up in Weimar by taking additional courses from the compulsory elective or elective modules. A missing or failed design project must be compensated for by attending an additional design studio in Weimar.

Students apply to the examination board for recognition of their achievements from the semester abroad after their return. from the semester abroad after their return. If grade conversions are necessary, these are carried out according to the so-called “modified Bavarian formula” (if this is not possible, e.g. in the case of grades in the form of letters, other recognised conversion methods are used).

Students who first enrol from winter semester 2025/26 onwards, cannot complete an internship instead of a semester abroad in order to obtain the necessary credit points. However, internships can be carried out on a voluntary basis while being enrolled. Students can apply for a semester on leave for this purpose.
