Das Programm LIFE-Programm hat seit 1992 die Aufgabe, zur Entwicklung, Umsetzung und Anpassung der EU-Umweltpolitik und -gesetzgebung beizutragen. Dazu werden Pilot- oder Demonstrationsprojekte mit europäischem Mehrwert gefördert.
Seit 2014 ist ein neues Arbeitsprogramm (2014-2017) veröffentlicht, welches den Rahmen für die Programmperiode bis 2020 festlegt und insgesamt 1,7 Milliarden Euro umfasst.
Das LIFE-Programm gliedert sich in zwei sub-programmes mit den jeweiligen Prioritäten:
