Project description

As part of the semester project »Weiss« (White), the students put together 29,000 cardboard squares to create the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar's exhibition stand. The visitors had to pass through an opening in the look-throughable-wall to see the exhibited books, postcards and other works of the students. The atrium-like interior was brightly lit from the ceiling area with matching module system lights.

We diagonally connected the 12 cm wide and 2 mm thick cardboard squares by interlocking them together in three directions without any glue. Different levels of permeability and stability are depent upon the depth of the slots used.

We determined the optimal proportions through initial research and load tests and were, therefore, able to determine the stability of the 2.70 m high walls and the up to 1.50 m extended roof elements. Our solution was to support the construction using polyethylene tension cables and to incorporate a boost support in the roof area. With the support of W.-Dieter Vogler and the experimental facilities at the University we subjected the various strengths to a stress test.
