Collaborative Internationale Online Lehre (COIL) | Susanne Wille, teachers with COIL experience

Topic: Leaning to Learn
Target Audience: Faculty, staff
Language: German
Time: 1:00 - 1:45 pm
Location: Online, https://meeting.uni-weimar.de/b/lar-cg2-lmu-tnh

A presentation on COIL (Collaborative Online International Teaching) whereby instructors hold online classes together with international partners and students work on projects together in intercultural teams. This will give students the opportunity to develop strategies and skills for working together, learn about international perspectives on their subject and expand their knowledge of subject-related problems through exchange and collaboration. COIL can be efficiently and simply into existing courses and does not require official contracts or credit transfer. This format is particularly applicable for instructors teaching regionally-specific courses, but who wish to offer their students a more international experience and the chance to learn 21st century skills. The International Office is currently supporting this format though professional development offers, as well as advising and support services as part of the INTeach project.

We have gained some initial experience in setting up and running hybrid seminars

  • In different physical spaces
  • With different technical equipment
  • With students on site, at home or remotely
  • In mixed group sizes
  • With alternating formats and methods

We will be sharing our experiences in this workshop. The workshop will be held in hybrid format. Together with participants, we will be addressing the following questions: How should rooms and technology be designed? What should students and instructors prepare for? How can hybrid teaching be (further) developed in terms of media didactics so that future learning spaces can evolve?

The Day of Teaching and Learning will be be opened by the Presidium.

The Latest on Teaching and Learning | Prof. Dr. Christian Koch, Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs
A short video feature will present the latest developments in teaching and learning at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Lernraum.Bauhaus | Sophie Foster, Jan Sieber, Clemens Bast
The »Lernraum.Bauhaus« project is a compilation and evaluation of educational and technological strategies for interdisciplinary use in all subjects taught at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The project aims to show how hybrid learning spaces can be designed and used in the future by identifying existing solutions and developing prototypical strategies that can be used in various scenarios. This talk will provide insight on the project and its developments.

Learning to do research | Dr. Eodie Vittu, Students and Staff from the European Urban Studies Master’s Degree Programme
The Guided Research Project was established as a blended learning course at the Institute for European Urban Studies in the 2019 summer semester. A core element of the European Urban Studies Master’s programme, the course includes an independent research project that Master’s students complete at various partner institutions in Germany and abroad. Students, their supervisors, the programme director and the academic advisor reflect on what makes the Guided Research Project unique in short interviews.

Public Arts Garage | Jun.-Prof. Dr. Alexandra Toland, Susanne Wille, Martin Leibinger
How can participatory, transdisciplinary performative art be remotely created through digital exchange? The Public Arts Garage connects doctoral candidate and Master’s students from various disciplines on tandem teams from five international partner universities. The teams collaborate virtually on projects that are implemented at their respective locations in Weimar, Belfast, Cork, Barcelona and Montreal. A garage can be a storage space for tools and ideas, a refuge from daily routine and a safe space where creative individuals who enjoy tinkering and creating can come together. We encourage students to embrace this »Garage Spirit« by seeking new approaches that bridge (regional and disciplinary) boundaries. The goal is to establish sustainable connections that help build a community of practice.

The Work of eTutors | Ludwig Lorenz, Lea Höpfner, Hendrik Kopplow, Samuel Flentje
We are eTutors at the Faculty of Media and we provide instructors and students with advice on digital tools. Our talk will summarise our recent work and the challenges digital learning is facing. This includes videos, podcasts, and advice on using Moodle and BBB, as well as free software.

Video Interviews About Teaching and Learning | Faculty
Teachers share their opinions and experiences with teaching and learning.

Outlook on the further programme
The programme’s upcoming offers will also be presented.

3:15 - 3:30 pm | Impulse - Inspiration

SpaceJam - The First Student Coding Challenge at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar | Aaron Kammer, Ludwig Lorenz

Target Audience: Students, doctoral candidates, faculty, staff
Language: German
Time: 3:15 - 3:30 pm
Location: Room 105, University Main Building, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8, 99423 Weimar

Computer science, like other STEM programmes, is characterised by instruction in a traditional lecture/practice format. We would like to see more diverse formats of teaching and are organising the first Coding Challenge in our department. Over a six-hour period, teams will be developing a control algorithm for a spaceship with the aim of improving their confidence in meeting expectations.

Prototyping the Future of Learning Spaces | Sherif Osman (Hasso-Plattner-Institut Potsdam)

Location: Room 213, Oberlichtsaal, University Main Building, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8, 99423 Weimar

Inspired by the Learning Environment Design and the associated research, we will discuss how approaching the redesign of our educational programs and spaces from analog to virtual to hybrid and hyflex occurred during unprecedented times. We will look at the many prototypes and learnings from redesigning the learning spaces and discuss with you the latest progress and ideas gained in the process in an attempt to together, prototype the future of learning spaces.

Perspectives on the Teaching of Architecture | Helin Can, Carolin Fust

cancelled de to illness

The aim of this impulse contribution is to initiate a critical analysis of how architecture is taught. We will be presenting a student perspective and examine the structures of teaching. Addressing current issues, such as sustainability and climate change, is something taken up by students in seminars because there is no room in the standard curriculum. But what would happen if this type of action received more attention and consideration and students had a say in what was taught?

4:00 - 5:30 pm | Workshops and Discussions - Ideas and Development

Teaching and Learning in Culturally Diverse Groups | Victor Vilceanu, Susanne Wille

Topic: Leaning to Learn
Target Audience: Students, doctoral candidates, faculty, staff
Language: English
Time: 4:00 - 5:30 pm
Location: Room 105, University Main Building, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8, 99423 Weimar

Academic and social success at university can be challenging for students from any cultural or academic background. International students, however, often face additional difficulties, not only because they are studying in a foreign language, but also because they have to deal with an unfamiliar legal system and teaching and learning culture. How can lecturers successfully navigate n international classroom? How can we actively support and encourage students to develop the skills required to study and work effectively? What are helpful tools and methods for teaching, evaluating and managing expectations in culturally diverse student groups? In this idea workshop, we will be engaging in conversation with instructors and students in the hopes of better understanding what kind of problems exist and how they arise? We will be sharing our experiences and collecting tools and best practices for the international classroom. We hope to walk away feeling inspired and motivated to create more effective and inclusive learning environments.

Begegnungsbau x.stahl | Jessica Christoph, Dr. Andreas Mai, Larissa Barth

Blackbox Bauhaus - A Critical Journey to University Utopia | Samuel Döring, Ludwig Lorenz, Margarita Garcia, Steffen de Rudder, Yasmin Djabarian (HFD)

cancelled due to illness

This panel discussion is based on the podcast of the same name created by the eTutors and questions the barriers that have emerged and that block innovation at our university. Innovation is not a metaphor for neo-liberalism or a question about how processes at a university can be made more efficient, faster and more straight-forward. In conversations with Bauhaus-Universität students, staff and professors, we want to find out how innovation and diversity are related, why free software— like roads and access to water— should be considered critical infrastructure, and what actually makes a good hackathon. Where do we, as the Bauhaus-Universität, want to go, especially in this era of advancing digitalisation? What are our dreams? What are the first steps we need to take? This panel discussion will be held in English.

5:40 - 6:00 pm | Teaching Award

Teaching Award Ceremony | StuKo (Student Government)

Topic: Leaning to Learn, Future Learning Spaces, University and Society

Language: German and English
Location: Room 102, Main Building, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8, 99423 Weimar

The Learnraum.Bauhaus will be open to visitors in the form of a pop-up. This will provide a starting point to experiment with some of our currently available hybrid technology and to design prototypes of hybrid spaces. The aim is for students and instructors to explore the meaning of hybrid together in a participatory and playful way.
