Project description
Building with wood is currently becoming a central topic among architects and within the entire industry in the course of a broad debate on climate change. While concrete was the architects' favourite until a few years ago, the use of wood as a material is gaining momentum. Although the figures of the construction industry still speak a language of cement plants, in the discourse on sustainable building, wood has now outstripped its competitors made of ore and minerals, not to mention petroleum-based products.
With the project for a research centre for building with wood, a Laboratorium Lignum, we want to take account of the material's new status. We are looking for a place where the practical can be combined with the theoretical in a sustainable and culturally anchored architecture. Here, research, teaching and learning will take place around wood. Of course, this place itself is to be made of wood. Possibly from trees in the surrounding area, cut by the sawmill next door and built by companies from the region.
The small town of Tannroda will serve as our design site. It is located not far from Weimar between Bad Berka and Kranichfeld in the Ilm valley. There is a sawmill on site and a lot of forest around it. The Lignum laboratory will be able to develop on an island on the Ilm that was previously home to a paper factory.
