Project description

For two decades, the international Weimar backup_festival has stood for the promotion of young filmmakers who try out new narrative forms, mix stylistic devices and genres and follow their own visions beyond the beaten track. Founded by students of the Bauhaus University Weimar in 1999, the "backup_festival" 2019 celebrates its 20th birthday with BACKUP AND BEYOND in the Bauhaus year. From 27.11.19 to 01.012.19 the BACKUP AND BEYOND anniversary festival presents the most innovative short films from students and graduates of art, media and design courses from over 3000 film submissions from all over the world. In 2019, the festival will not only look back on the eventful history of the festival, but also look to the future with a special programme: What themes and visions are currently occupying young filmmakers and media artists worldwide and how will they be told in 20 years' time? The anniversary festival will be celebrated with new programme items, a special exhibition, a best-of of the last 20 years, workshops and debates on the future of narration with international guests, filmmakers, experts and filmmaking alumni of the Bauhaus University Weimar. At the Summaery, the 60-person student BACKUP AND BEYOND Team will provide a first glimpse of the future on the inner courtyard of the University Library.
