12th International Bauhaus-Colloquium

The 12th International Bauhaus Colloquium took place from 4 April to 7 April 2013 at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The conference honoured the 150th birthday of the Belgian architect, artist and designer, according to the modern conception of the total work of art in the 20th century and its significance for the younger architecture discourse. Under the title »Henry van de Velde and the Idea of the Total Work of Art«, architecture- and art historians, architects and architectural theorists, philosophers and artists discussed the unity of art and life. Topics included the dissolution of traditional boundaries between genres and the disposition towards the total work of art, with a special eye towards architecture that according to Van de Velde is »the heart of the true unity of the arts«.

The Bauhaus Colloquium has been taking place since 1976 and devotes itself to topics of architectural theory and history in German-speaking countries, such as important aspects of the history of the origins of the Bauhaus as well as the modern understanding of architecture. In addition, it connects to further-reaching theoretical questions, for example the relationship between architecture and power.
