Two Student Teams Recognised at »wa award 2026«

Success for the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism: Two student teams have already been recognised at the prestigious »wa award 2026«, the most important competition for young architects. With international entries from 100 students from over 30 countries, two projects from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students secured a prize and an honourable mention.

The »Von Wand zu Stütze – Grundschule am Rosengarten« design by Sophia Frischmuth and Mara Steinert was awarded a prize. The semester project, supervised by Jr. Prof. Christina Köchling, proposes innovative strategies for dealing with traditional GDR buildings and focusses on urban mining: Building components are repurposed in terms of both structure and design, and open up new spatial possibilities.

Laurin Jakob Schölzel and Leonie Richter received an honourable mention for their workshop and workspace cube design. The project was carried out as part of the »Praktiken der Nachhaltigkeit« department under the supervision of Sebastian Schröder (Dipl.-Ing.).

The »wa award« run by the »wettbewerbe aktuell« platform and is specifically aimed at architecture students and graduates. In addition to prize money and non-cash prizes, the winners benefit from the publication of their work and visibility in the professional community.

This year’s award-winning projects exemplify how young planners are responding to current challenges, including dealing with existing buildings, material lifecycles, and changing usage requirements, with innovative design strategies.
