Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Honoured With 2022 Ladislav Sutnar Prize
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is this year’s recipient of the Ladislav Sutnar Prize, a prize which has been awarded by the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic, since 2021 and recognises the »Gropiusian vision of art and technology«. Prof. Andreas Mühlenberend, Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, accepted the award on behalf of the Presidium during a ceremony held in Pilsen on 15 November 2022.
The prize is presented to living Czech and foreign artists for exceptional achievements in the field of visual arts, in particular applied art and design, and also for pedagogical work. The award can also be given to institutions whose programmes and activities support modern art and design.
This year’s winners were the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) Karlsruhe and British designer Stuart Haygarth. When explaining their selection, the jury stated that: »The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is being honoured with this prize for their realisation of Gropius’ vision of art and technology – a new entity established through a specialisation in artistic and technical fields and interdisciplinary collaboration. Since 1996, the university has followed in the footsteps of its distinguished predecessor, which established a new form of modern art university not only in its name, but also in its willingness to experiment, international open-mindedness and creativity.«
»This award is a wonderful recognition of our efforts to think and practice art, design, science and technology together. On top of this, I have experienced a level of hospitality here second to none«, says the Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, Prof. Andreas Mühlenberend, expressing his joy about the win and the invitation to accept the prize on behalf of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in PIlsen.
